A celebration of the mystic minimalist's 90th birthday, featuring performances of his iconic pieces: the elemental Keyboard Study No. 2, In C (called "musical democracy at its highest level" by the Library of Congress) and A Rainbow in Curved Air, the latter in a new transcription by Terry's son and frequent performance partner Gyan Riley. Along with Gyan, Bang on a Can All-Stars and a host of special guests will conjure some of the greatest music of the 20th century under a full moon—aligning with Terry's cosmic outlook in the most auspicious way.

A specially-chosen ensemble of players from Bang on a Can visit Caramoor for a celebration of legendary composer Terry Riley’s 90th birthday with a dynamic spatial-specific performance of Riley’s minimalist classic In C, a magical music adventure designed for the grounds of Caramoor. This landmark piece, written in 1964, kicked off a revolution and introduced the musical style now known as Minimalism to a mainstream audience. The piece inspired many classical composers including Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and John Adams, as well as those in the rock world, such as John Cale and Brian Eno.

»In C«, a colorful excursion into the world of minimal music, marks the Dresdner Musikfestspiele debut of an icon of modern dance, Sasha Waltz. The music for the acclaimed choreography is based on Terry Riley’s eponymous, ground-breaking composition of 1964 – a key work of minimal music with a revolutionary effect. Waltz has created a multi-layered choreography from its 53 sound figures, with a movement corresponding to each of them. »It is a democratic piece about being part of a group as an individual, not an individual in the group«, says Waltz. The performance is rounded out by the live performance of the Swiss industrial band The Young Gods.

The evening kicks off with the epic cinematography of Ron Fricke's "Koyaanisqatsi," paired with Philip Glass's celebrated score, offering an apocalyptic vision of the clash between urban life, technology, and the environment. This powerful film, devoid of text, narration, or dialogue, relies on Glass's memorable score to captivate the audience.
