Grażyna Bacewicz’s astonishing quartet for four violins starts our season, and the concert concludes with Franz Schubert’s masterful Trout quintet, all performed by Marin Symphony all-stars.

The Springfield Symphony performed Beethoven’s ever-popular and dramatic Fifth Symphony at its inaugural concert in 1935, so in honor of our 90th year, we play it again. You will also hear Sibelius’s stormy and passionate Violin Concerto and Overture for Orchestra by Polish composer Graznya Bacewich, one of the first women composers from Poland to gain international acclaim. And there will be one more piece, a surprise for everyone to honor our anniversary…that you’ll have to be here to hear!

'Joy and pain interweave in the light of the world…Thousands of years flash by with glory and strength, revealing that which is indestructible'. Extraordinary claims; but then extraordinary is the only word for the heaven-storming choral finale of Ferruccio Busoni’s colossal Piano Concerto: a masterpiece on the scale of a symphony, composed in 1904 by one of Mahler’s greatest fans.

Emerging Artist Alumni Concert – War and Injustice: Solace Across Genres

Associate Professor of Violin Timothy Kantor will present his final recital at the University of Arizona. He will be leaving Arizona to join the faculty of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Australia this fall. The recital opens with one of Mozart’s brilliant violin sonatas, the heart of which is a colossal D-minor theme and variations movement. This is followed by a lively quartet for violins performed with Adjunct Instructor and Tucson Symphony Associate Concertmaster Michelle Abraham Kantor and two of Professor Kantor’s extraordinarily accomplished former students. The program will conclude with Beethoven’s ultimate contribution to the violin sonata repertoire, a piece that in many ways concludes his heroic middle compositional period and alludes to some of the profound innovations of his latest works.

You can simply go to a concert at the Philharmonie, spontaneously, during your lunch break – and with free admission: every Wednesday at 13:00 between September and June. The programme lasts 40 to 50 minutes: chamber music, piano works or a percussion duo – everything from Tchaikovsky to tango. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Karajan-Akademie regularly perform, as well as guests from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Berlin music conservatories. As can be expected at a lunch concert, catering is available from 12 noon until shortly before the concert begins.

Brahms, Prokofiev and Tabakova

Although it might seem that the peers Josef Bohuslav Foerster, born in Prague, and Leoš Janáček, born in Hukvaldy five years later, were friends or artistic partners, this is not the case. Rather, there was mutual respect between the composers. Like Janáček, Foerster came from a family of schoolteachers. Half a year older than Gustav Mahler and a whole generation older than Josef Suk and Vítězslav Novák, Foerster's music had one characteristic quality: strange inconspicuousness and modesty. Foerster never aspired to coin his own distinctly personal musical language. He formed a strong friendship and deep understanding with Mahler. They first met in Hamburg.
