In Rossini's masterful comedy, clothes make the man and nothing is as it seems. Not only does Cenerentola change from a mocked maid to a fairytale princess, the prince also swaps his unloved role for that of his servant - and the ambitious stepfamily is ultimately left empty-handed. Between breathtaking vocal acrobatics and virtuoso role-playing, a social satire for young and old unfolds in which only the sincerest heart can see through. Giacomo Puccini composed his Il trittico as a triptych of one-act plays in which shudder, sadness and laughter are successively evoked. The three short operas are now being performed together for the first time at Dutch National Opera and are the culmination of the three-year Puccini series by conductor Lorenzo Viotti and director Barrie Kosky .

On one side, the stage: Zerbinette and her commedia dell'arte troupe . On the other, the myth: Ariadne abandoned by Theseus. In the middle, a composer mistreated by his patron. From their unlikely encounter bursts a firework display of fantasy.

With Ariadne auf Naxos , Strauss and his librettist Hofmannsthal elevate the theatre to a witty mise en abyme: a patron brings together at his home a composer, commissioned to write an opera seria , and a troupe of Italian comic actors. Their task is to give a joint performance!

To thwart their master's schemes, the two young lovers will turn everything upside down, dragging the Countess, the jealous, the naive, and the opportunists into their wake. From this cascading intrigue, Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, inspired by Beaumarchais, craft a comedy that is both funny and profound. Deception, rivalries, thwarted love, jealousy, and forgiveness: in a single day, all the characters grapple with their desires and contradictions,   and we readily recognize our own in them.
