Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of classical music with "Music In the Time of Goya," a captivating concert presented by CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra. This exquisite musical journey is set to take place on Sunday, September 10, 2023, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Hudson Library, located at 96 Library Street, Hudson, OH, 44236, United States.

The program promises an afternoon of enchanting melodies with selections that transport the audience back to the era of the Spanish romantic painter Francisco Goya. The repertoire includes Nebra's selections from "Vendado es Amor, no es ciego," Soler's "Quintet No. 4 for Two Violins, Viola, Cello, and Harpsichord in A minor," Castel's "Trio No. 3 for Two Violins and Cello in E-flat major," and Corselli's "Si aquel Monarca, Cantata for Soprano, Two Violins and Continuo."

Featuring a lineup of talented musicians, the concert will showcase the vocal prowess of soprano Andréa Walker, alongside instrumentalists Guillermo Salas-Suárez and Phaik Tzhi Chua on violin, Yäel Senamaud-Cohen on viola, Jane Leggiero on cello, Tracy Rowell on bass, and Qin Yang Tan on harpsichord.

This program features a miscellany of pieces from the vast, multi-cultural tradition of music inspired by the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Mary Magdalene. In the early Church, both saints were venerated within specific sanctoral feasts of the liturgical year, and throughout the Middle Ages a variety of paraliturgical prayers and music influenced by these liturgies also evolved. This recital draws upon this devotional realm, exploring many different regions and time periods across Europe through the perspective of the two Marys.

For amateurs, rich patrons, and professionals alike music was a way to get to know new people, spend time with family, solidify business relationships or just have a nice time after dinner. This May, meet new friends, or bring some old ones, when we share chamber music for clarinet and strings by Mozart, Reicha, and Crusell. We're excited to welcome historical clarinetist Dominic Giardino to Cleveland for a unique opportunity to hear this music performed on historical instruments

In the second half of the 18th century, the newest musical genres were invented, showcased, and debated in domestic gatherings called salons. In an attempt to recreate the intimate and experimental atmosphere of a musical salon, this presentation will confront the divide between performer and audience, professional and amateur, and home and concert space. Featuring a range of North German historical performance practices including self-accompanied Lieder, improvisation, the free fantasia, and accompanied recitation, this program will draw from 18th-century primary sources to demonstrate ways of enlivening this repertoire.

Graduate Lecture-Recital: Andréa Walker, soprano, "An Evening at the 18th-Century Salon: Music, Poetry, and Declamation in the age of C.P.E. Bach"

This lecture recital explores the concept and practice of “partimento”, a pedagogical and compositional technique associated with Neapolitan conservatories in the 18th century. In particular, it focuses on how this technique might be internalized and practiced by a modern performer and used to analyze and, in turn, “speak” the musical language of the period, Focusing on violin sonatas by Nicola Porpora (1686-1768) and Giovanni Antonio Piani (1678-1760), the presentation will explain the basic techniques of the practice, analyze two sonata movements, and conclude with the creation of a Prelude in the style of Piani using the musical materials and concepts that would have been available to an 18th-century student of a Neapolitan conservatory.
