The deck is stacked against Violetta, the ill-fated heroine of this well-loved tragedy—a courtesan trying to turn her life around, she falls for the romantic Alfredo, but illness and family meddling thwart her one chance at happiness. The buoyant music dances through party scenes and tenderly carries the heartbroken lovers through longing and despair. This stylish new production is designed by Tony Award–winner Christopher Oram and directed by Louisa Muller in her Dallas Opera debut.

Violetta is the belle of the ball at every party in Paris, until she falls in love with Alfredo. They run away from high society for a simple life in the country, when Alfredo’s father asks Violetta to sacrifice her love to save the family’s honor.

A comic-tragic opera with grand choruses and fabulous dances plays out in a world of glamour and deception. Rameau’s Platée is a first for Garsington Opera as we delve into the world of French Baroque opera, made possible by our special partnership with The English Concert. We are thrilled that director Louisa Muller and designer Christopher Oram return after their RPS Award-winning production of The Turn of the Screw, and we welcome conductor and French Baroque specialist Paul Agnew, who makes his Garsington debut.

Sorcery, jealous rages, desire, and hellish Demons all come into play in Handel’s opera Amadigi di Gaula. This compact, taut drama is a vehicle for Handel to do what he did best: exploring the emotions of his characters, from love to suffering—reflecting on sentiment in a way perhaps deeper than in any of his other operas. In this composition he conjures a surprising sound world with star countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo here in the title role. Handel also makes prominent use of wind instruments, which make the music unusually colorful, befitting this story which explores the full gamut of human emotion.
Amadigi di Gaula is a co-production between Boston Baroque and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chrorale.

One of opera’s most enduring masterpieces, with music of exquisite tenderness and lyricism, Verdi’s La traviata is a tragic story that is both powerful and deeply touching. Returning after their sparkling production of Platée (2024) and RPS Awardwinning The Turn of the Screw (2019/22) are director Louisa Muller and designer Christopher Oram. We also welcome back Madison Leonard and Oleksiy Palchycov as Violetta and Alfredo, whose partnership delighted us all in L’elisir d’amore last year. The Philharmonia Orchestra will perform under the baton of Douglas Boyd, and Tess Jackson will make her conducting debut with Garsington Opera for two performances.
