When harp lessons were announced at a school assembly, Mared Pugh-Evans’s hand shot up immediately. She later recalled in an interview that she had always been very well-behaved — it was simply in her nature — but that moment may have been the most mischievous thing she had ever done. Little Mared was six at the time, and her father was the headmaster of her primary school. And that headmaster looked pretty stunned on the podium — perhaps mentally calculating the family budget, since a good harp can easily cost many tens of thousands of pounds. In Mared’s case, however, the investment more than paid off: by eleven she was already proving herself in competitions, and she has since earned numerous awards. The crowning moment came in 2024, when King Charles III appointed her “The King’s Harpist” — a royal position that had been reinstated by the then Prince of Wales in 2000. Back then, it went to Catrin Finch, the very harpist whose concert the young Mared had once listened to in rapt fascination, sparking her own love of the instrument. A “full circle” if ever there was one!

Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1985 and is now known as one of the best and most interesting interpreters of F. Chopin in the world.

Strahinja Mitrović made history in 2024 when he became the first double bassist to win the Guildhall School of Music & Drama’s illustrious Gold Medal since its inception 109 years earlier, following in the footsteps of, among others, Jacqueline Du Pré, Sir Bryn Terfel and Maxim Rysanov. When the Parisian composer Lili Boulanger took Psalm 130 ‘Du fond de l’abîme’ and set it to music in a darkly opulent, lyrical style, she was already acutely aware that her life—marked by serious illness but wholly dedicated to music—would not be long. In his own Requiem Op. 48, Gabriel Fauré (an early admirer and supporter of Boulanger’s exceptional talent) sought to depict death as peaceful and consoling. With subtle nuance and great depth, the choral soloists of the Komische Oper Berlin, led by choir director David Cavelius, are presenting late Romantic masterpieces of French sacred music. Meanwhile, the renowned Latvian organist Iveta Apkalna will unlock the radiant power of the Konzerthaus organ with Francis Poulenc’s expressive Concerto for Organ in G minor.

There's nothing like a concert celebrating love in all its forms on the eve of Valentine's Day! Fauré's Suite from Pelléas et Mélisande (1898), both delicate and sensual, plunges into the mysterious world of Maeterlinck, where love is inextricably intertwined with fate. As for Prokofiev's Suite from Romeo and Juliet , taken from Shakespeare's masterpiece, it evokes all-consuming passion, between lyricism and heightened violence, leading us into the tragic drama of two star-crossed lovers. The three songs by the Argentinian Golijov (in 2002), originally written for the soprano Dawn Upshaw, are little gems inspired by poems by Sally Potter, Rosalía de Castro, and Emily Dickinson.

The "Organ Symphony" is one of France's most important symphonies. The work's name, incidentally, does not originate from the composer – Saint-Saëns preferred to call it a "symphony with organ." The organ is "merely" one timbre among others – it is sparse, but its impact is all the more powerful. A piano duo is also part of the orchestra. While the "Organ Symphony" is not a religious composition, the melody of the "Dies Irae" nevertheless runs through the entire work. The two gigantic sections – approximately 20 and 15 minutes long respectively – contain the usual four symphony movements. Saint-Saëns considered this (his last) symphony to be his magnum opus.

Otherworldly and infinitely fragile: this is how one might describe the atmosphere of Gabriel Fauré’s Prélude from his symbolist suite Pelléas et Mélisande that sets the tone at the beginning of this concert. It tells the tragic story of two lovers, which, similarly to Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, does not end happily – but contains breathtaking emotion. It is a work for which conductor Tugan Sokhiev has a particular fondness. Camille Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto offers a double premiere since, oddly enough, it has never been performed before on the BRSO stage. French pianist Alexandre Kantorow, who in just a few years has managed to play his way around the world on 88 keys and achieve international fame, will also be making his BRSO debut.

The 23/24 season featured a recital debut by violinist James Ehnes, who captivated Rackham Auditorium with his insightful commentary and expressive playing. Now Ehnes is joined by pianist Inon Barnatan, violist Jonathan Vinocour, and cellist Raphael Bell for a program of Fauré’s two piano quartets. Gabriel Fauré’s youthful first piano quartet, full of intoxicating melodies, is paired with his strikingly individual, impassioned second quartet. Among his best-known chamber works, Fauré’s piano quartets are exquisitely crafted and ideal vehicles for these four superb artists and musical soulmates.

Although it’s long been clear that women are capable of anything, the works of many female composers have yet to claim their rightful place in the classical canon. A concert by the Kalliopé Trio will feature music by two remarkable 19th-century women, set within a programme framed in the noble, though sombre, key of D minor. The final piece of the evening offers a rare opportunity to compare the musical voices of the Mendelssohn siblings.
