Two of the classical music world’s biggest rising stars, Sheku Kenneh-Mason and Isata Kanneh-Mason, perform for the first time together in Carnegie Hall’s grandest concert hall: Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. In this afternoon performance, they showcase their remarkable artistic rapport in a program of cello sonatas by Felix Mendelssohn, Fauré, and Poulenc, as well as a new work by Natalie Klouda. The siblings’ 2022 sold-out duo concert of sonatas in Zankel Hall was praised for its “sense of togetherness, of shared sensibility [that] permeated the whole concert” (The New York Times). “This truly felt like a concert of duets.” Performed at their best, these pieces are true collaborative showcases.

The Year of Czech Music is a decennial celebration of Czech composers, taking place around the world.

Dvorak's Violin Concerto is a marvellous example of the great Czech composer incorporating the spirit of his homeland into a concert work that has charmed violinists and audiences around the world. And his Bohemian spirit also shines through in Symphony No. 8, one of his most energetic and playful works.

The English Chamber Orchestra is conducted by their Principal Guest Conductor, Roberto Fores Veses in this unmissable concert, which also includes works by Faure and Saint-Saens, and explores the close connection between the Prague and Paris Conservatories.

A ceremonial, elegant dance is hidden behind the name Pavane, derived from the Spanish word for peacock. Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante défunte" has become particularly famous, and the Celli Family plays it in a version for eight cellos. Polish violinist Maria Wlozczowska is the associate artistic director of the Royal Northen Sinfonia and a soloist with a career on both sides of the Atlantic. It is a joy to welcome back Perth’s own Alasdair Beatson who, in addition to his solo career has now become the go-to chamber collaborator for some of Europe’s major soloists and ensembles.

Performed in an ideal setting in a church completed in 1890, Fauré’s beloved choral work is preceded by music by his friends and contemporaries, sung by a group founded in 1987 by Hervé Niquet which specialises – though not exclusively – in French music of the Baroque period. The programme is taken from the group's CD published at the end of August 2024 by Alpha Classics to celebrate the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Fauré’s death.

Gabriel Fauré, who was sent to train as a church organist at only 9 years old, must have provided music for countless funerals. But he said he composed this Requiem “for pleasure.” This would be a Requiem to bring comfort to those who mourn, a series of heavenly tableaux rather than fire and brimstone, and one of his most beloved works. Tōru Takemitsu’s Requiem for String Orchestra expresses a more intense vein of grief. And finally, a riddle — Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations.

Polish violinist Maria Włoszczowska is recognised for her versatile musicianship, performing as soloist, director/concertmaster, and chamber musician. Recent career highlights include her BBC Proms solo debut with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and Dinis Sousa, her New York recital debut at 92NY with Jeremy Denk and directing the Chamber Orchestra of Europe at Mozartwoche Salzburg. As Leader of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Maria also regularly directs the orchestra in repertoire such as Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante.

Consolation and communion are this concert’s common themes. Conductor Kazuki Yamada leads the SF Symphony and Chorus in Fauré’s tenderly radiant and humane Requiem, an underrated stunner. Hailed for her sensitive and insightful interpretations, pianist Hélène Grimaud performs Ravel’s sprightly Piano Concerto in G major. In 1931, as he was finishing the concerto, Ravel explained that it was “written very much in the same spirit as [concertos by] Mozart and Saint-Saëns.”

In 1895 Georges Enescu moved to Paris to study at the Conservatoire, where one of his teachers was Fauré; his 1899 Second Violin Sonata partakes of this new French manner. Fauré’s First Cello Sonata was launched in 1917. A late work, the Piano Trio was first heard in 1923 and quickly taken up by the celebrated trio of Cortot, Thibaud and Casals. Ravel’s 1903 String Quartet was dedicated to his teacher Fauré.

The Van Kuijk Quartet’s international accolades include First, Best Beethoven and Best Haydn Prizes at the 2015 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet competition; its lunchtime programme features a selection of French mélodies in transcriptions and arrangements for string quartet.

The surging passions of César Franck’s repurposed sonata perfectly complement the lyricism, humour, and prescient unrest that infiltrate the Shostakovich that precedes it. Together with Arvo Pärt’s mesmerising distillation of stillness, the Fauré centenary is affectionately acknowledged twice-over; Dvořák dips into nostalgic reverie; and remembering childhood, too, is Sérgio Assad, whose evocative Menino was originally composed for Yo-Yo Ma and guitar duo.

Chamber music forms a significant and forward-looking part of Fauré’s output. Responsible for this part of the Wigmore’s centenary commemoration, the composer’s devoted cellist champion opens this intensive segment of exploration with two major works placed alongside one by Fauré’s close friend and teacher Saint-Saëns, and another by his own pupil and friend, Nadia Boulanger.

La Mirada Symphony: A Prelude to Winter

The focus is on Gabriel Fauré's musical requiem, which is one of the great requiem settings of the classical-romantic tradition.

Casco Phil is present for an accessible concert packed with beloved classics. A few highlights have been selected from the heyday of symphonic music, which together form an anthology of the best that orchestral literature has to offer. From the enchanting Morgenstimmung by Grieg and Pavane by Fauré, to the Spanish fire of De Falla's Danza Ritual del Fuego, to the lurid Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, Casco Phil traverses almost the entire emotional spectrum in a bird's eye view. The universally admired Swedish artist received the Female Singer of the Year Award at the International Opera Awards in 2018, the same year that she was awarded the title of Court Singer by Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. Her operatic roles – many of them performed at the Royal Opera House in London or at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as well as in Sweden and elsewhere – run from Mozart to Puccini, Richard Strauss and Janáček. Her widely ranging programme explores songs from the French, German (or in Weill’s case from his post-German period) and Swedish traditions.

Meet the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra's musicians in smaller ensembles when they play works they have chosen themselves because they are close to their hearts.



Throughout his all-too-short life, Mozart had great joy and fascination with the singing and musical qualities of the woodwinds. He composed a multitude of works which stage the qualities of the woodwinds in the most beautiful way, and at the same time you sense Mozart's great insight into the enormous development that took place with woodwinds in the period. The clarinet and basset horn were new instruments that immediately caught Mozart's attention.

The twin peaks of tonight’s all-French programme are two masterpieces from Gabriel Fauré and Maurice Ravel, beginning with the former’s consolatory Requiem, a work whose clean lines, pure vocal textures and elegant orchestrations appear to propose a new philosophy of religion. Prepare for temperatures to rise with the sensual awakenings and sultry dances of Ravel’s suite for the ballet Daphnis and Chloe, evoking an ancient world of pastoral delights. Two prayers by Lili Boulanger, who died tragically young at 24, and Fauré’s incidental music written for a London production of Maeterlinck’s Symbolist play Pelleas and Melisande complete the evening.

The San Francisco International Piano Festival proudly presents the debut recital of the acclaimed pianist and composer, Asiya Korepanova. Known for her virtuosic skill and emotional depth, Ms. Korepanova will perform a program that showcases her original transcriptions, beginning with a tribute to the festival's featured composer, Gabriel Fauré.

Asiya Korepanova is celebrated for her comprehensive repertoire, which includes over 60 piano concertos and solo works spanning from the Baroque period to contemporary compositions. She is the only pianist to have performed the complete solo piano works of Rachmaninoff within the composer’s 150th-anniversary year in 2023. Her performances are noted for their emotional intensity and technical brilliance, earning her repeated engagements and widespread admiration.

In addition to her prowess as a pianist, Ms. Korepanova is also a recognized composer, visual artist, and poet. Her transcriptions of major works, such as Richard Strauss’ "Ein Heldenleben" and Mussorgsky's "Songs and Dances of Death," have solidified her reputation as a formidable transcriber. Her recent compositions include the world premiere recording of her concerto for alto saxophone and piano, "Poéme," and the premiere of her Piano Quintet "I marvel at the sky."

Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad’s eclectic style finds inspiration in jazz. Drawing a parallel to French Impressionists who were likewise inspired, this program pairs Assad with Ravel’s masterful Violin Sonata and Fauré’s evocative Piano Quartet No. 2.

This sumptuous program celebrates the French musical voice, with its distinctively dazzling variety of tonal effects. First up, a sextet for winds, strings, and piano by Guillaume Connesson—one of today’s most widely performed French composers—whose music has been called “a celebration of life, filled with joyous melodies, rhythmic vitality, and a sense of wonder" (American Record Guide). An elegiac oboe sonata by Poulenc, dedicated to the memory of his close friend (and bridge partner) Prokofiev, is followed by an original arrangement of Debussy's dreamy sunset in song. Finally, the gorgeous opulence and exuberance of Fauré’s first Piano Quartet. C’est magnifique!

After Mozart and Beethoven established the piano as an essential force in classical music, Russian and French Romantic composers took the instrument to the next level. Yet these distinct cultures sought profoundly different sounds: Anton Arensky and Sergei Rachmaninov bared the powerful soul of Russia, while Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy reveled in ethereal pleasures.
