“There is something exquisite about the construction of a common orange,” says American violinist, singer and composer Caroline Shaw (born 1982). One of the most common varieties is the Valencia orange – juicy, sweet, and with a thin peel. “Nature is so simple, and yet so extraordinary.” In her piece Valencia, the image of an orange is evoked through gently undulating overtones and slowly flowing chords and melodies.

Opera and drama are rarely the focus of Thuringia's largest concert orchestra, which makes the program, which combines two stage works, all the more remarkable. Opening with Gabriel Fauré's incidental music for "Pelléas et Mélisande," the delicacy and tragedy of Maeterlinck's symbolic drama come alive in impressionistic soundscapes. Pure joie de vivre and butterflies in the stomach: that's a feeling that unites all three works in our Koblenz concert this year. Gabriel Fauré's fragrant suite Masques et Bergamasques (loosely translated: "Carnival Masks and Dances from Bergamo"), Maurice Ravel's sparkling Piano Concerto, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's radiant Jupiter Symphony combine profound thought and the bluest Mediterranean sky! In this Ravel year, we're collaborating with one of Germany's most prominent young pianists, Alexander Krichel, who will be making his debut with the Beethoven Orchestra in Koblenz. Incidentally, after pushing the Koblenz stage of the Rhein-Mosel-Halle to its limits with works by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss over the past two seasons, we're demonstrating our orchestra's virtuosity and joy of playing this time with a concentrated, classical orchestra!

Bach's music was a great inspiration for Johannes Brahms, who dedicated his choral work "Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Müseligen" from 1877 to the great Bach scholar Philipp Spitta. The entire work revolves around the big question: "Why": If God is almighty and merciful, why is there all this suffering in the world? The motet ends with a hymn text based on Simeon's Praise by Luther. Here the struggle is over, and the vulnerable have found rest and comfort in the belief that death is not the last word.

A tragic opera for soprano and orchestra in one act, lasting around forty minutes, Poulenc's La voix humaine was written in 1958 to a text by Jean Cocteau. This long and moving telephone monologue by a woman abandoned by her lover is performed by the Belgian soprano Anne-Catherine Gillet and accompanied on the organ (starting from Poulenc's piano version) by Yoann Tardivel, in a sober staging, conceived for this concert. The prelude to Pelléas et Mélisande by Fauré and the Three Dances for organ by Jehan Alain, subtitled Joys, Mournings, Struggles , provide an ideal introduction.

Our first guest artist of the 25-26 concert season, pianist Evren Ozel, recently competed in the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Ozel came away with two awards: Best Performance of the Mozart Concerto Award, and the Bronze Medal for the overall competition – bravo!! We are thrilled to have him perform at our season opener on September 13 and are pleased to partner with Opening Nights at FSU to offer audiences an additional chance to hear his talent. At this special recital, Evren Ozel will perform some of his favorite solo piano works in the more intimate setting of Opperman Music Hall.

An evening full of discoveries: This concert brings to light musical treasures that are all too rarely heard in the shadow of famous names. Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga’s First String Quartet – written when he was only 16 years old – reveals an astonishing genius who died far too young. The powerful piano quintet with double bass by Mozart’s pupil Johann Nepomuk Hummel combines classical and early romanticism, while Felix Mendelssohn’s youthful String Quintet op. 18 surprises with brilliance and vigour. This is accompanied by Fauré’s songful »3 Romances sans paroles« and Jules Auguste Demersseman’s virtuoso fantasy for alto saxophone – a real rarity. A programme of musical surprises.

We can often understand music even better when we hear the words it is based on. In a delightful blend of concert and reading, the Studio Orchestra Duisburg and narrator Natalia Hüskens juxtapose musical and lyrical pairs of works—concrete, as in the artistic encounter between Gabriel Fauré and Paul Verlaine, or Ralph Waldo Emerson and Charles Ives, but also imaginary ones. Antonín Dvořák drew inspiration for his "Czech Suite" from the sounds of his homeland, while Mendelssohn Bartholdy found it for his "Hebrides Overture" in the magnificent natural scenery of Scotland. What would the appropriate poems sound like? The first serenade concert provides the answer.

Mary Bevan released her debut solo disc, Voyages, in 2017 (with pianist Joseph Middleton on the Signum label), which explores the music of eminent French composers and the settings they wrote for the poems of Charles Baudelaire. For this recital, Mary revisits her favourite repertoire from Voyages, including songs by Duparc, Fauré, Debussy, Chabrier, and more, but this time, each song is paired with another by a female composer writing around the same time. In this way, the recital seeks to bring the female composers from out of the shadow of their male counterparts and restore them to their rightful places as composers of equal quality and interest.

Composer Molly Joyce composed a contemporary climate-aware response to Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ, confronting the slow yet looming crisis, alluding to the individual actions as missing the forest for the trees when systematic destruction is ignored. Fauré’s tragic love story Pelléas et Mélisande follows this journey into the woods, before handing off to Haydn’s Symphony No. 103 “Drumroll,” where a seemingly peaceful and pastoral E-flat major hides a warning of an ambiguous dies irae in its theme.

The opening words of Gabriel Fauré's Cantique de Jean Racine evoke this year's theme for the Summer Music in City Churches festival, and his timeless, ethereal setting of the Requiem mass is the first of the three which form the pillars of the festival ("may light perpetual shine upon them"). Both of these much-loved works are performed in the orchestration by Sir John Rutter, alongside his own 'Suite Antique' and a pair of colourful dances by the master of impressionism, Debussy.

Many French composers are renowned masters in the art of playing with musical colours. Among them are Gabriel Fauré and his Belgian contemporary, César Franck, who composed in the French style. Their Piano Quintets stand as pivotal contributions to the chamber music repertoire. During the premiere of Franck's Piano Quintet in f, none other than Camille Saint-Saëns played the piano, while Fauré dedicated his First Piano Quintet to the renowned violinist-composer Eugène Ysaÿe. An intimate concert filled with melodic refinement, subtle textures, and harmonic innovation.

AMUZ (Festival van Vlaanderen Antwerpen)

CYS will present its final season concert featuring both the Associate Orchestra and the Virtuosi and Intermezzi String Ensembles at 1:00 PM on May 18 at Smithwick Theater, Foothill College. Maestra Kati Kyme will conduct works by Gabriel Fauré, C.P.E. Bach, and Joseph Haydn with the Virtuosi String Ensemble. Haydn composed his Symphony No. 45 in 1768 during his “Sturm und Drang” (Storm and Stress) period, and it carries the subtitle “La Passione”. The Intermezzi Strings will perform works by Mozart and Schubert, as well as selections from Gustav Holst’s St. Paul Suite.
