A tragic love story is perfect for the drama of ballet and opera – if not for the story’s protagonists! Prokofiev’s ballet depicts the most infamous ‘star-cross’d lovers’ of them all, Romeo and Juliet, with music that is a brilliant realisation of Shakespeare’s play and some of Prokofiev’s most memorable and instantly appealing work, while Wagner’s Prelude from Tristan und Isolde is a lushly hypnotic, yearning depiction of two more tragic lovers, this time from Renaissance romance. Pianist Clare Hammond performs Kenneth Hesketh’s Uncoiling the River, a piece which loops round itself, sinuous and labyrinthine, and explores our perception of the passing of time.

Wagner’s evocative Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde is a stirring exploration of love and longing. Wagner’s intense and lyrical music sets the stage for an unforgettable journey through the complexities of passion and loss.

Before this, we present one of Bruckner’s early and rarely performed compositions to mark Bruckner’s 200th anniversary, as part of the international #AntonBruckner2024 celebrations. In 1862 Bruckner attended a performance of Wagner’s Tannhäuser that changed his life forever: from then on, he determined to devote more time to composition. With hardly any experience in orchestral scoring, Bruckner’s characteristics are clearly present in this overture which ends with a typically Brucknerian blazing G major conclusion.

Walton’s First Symphony was a landmark of English composition and represents the peak of his symphonic thinking. Its turbulent emotions and high-voltage energy were the fruit of tempestuous events surrounding Walton at the time. After an eloquent, dramatic first movement, a stinging, malicious Scherzo and a truly melancholic slow movement, the finale is totally different in outlook – an almost Elgarian ceremonial jubilation, as if a cloud has lifted. The Concerto for the Left Hand displays a great deal of resourcefulness and originality on Ravel’s part. Unfolding in a single movement in three sections, dark and powerful, it is so full of illusion and texture that the solo part rarely gives the slightest hint that a mere single hand is involved. The exquisite orchestral scoring leans toward the rich, lower pitches which lends it a rather sombre hue and an apt heroic grandeur. In the overture to his only comic opera, Wagner skilfully combines the main themes associated with the mastersingers and their apprentices.

In October 1898, the committee of the Norwich Festival requested a short choral work for their next Season. However, during this period Elgar was preoccupied with writing his Enigma Variations, and by the time he returned to the work, the committee had changed its mind. They had engaged the young alto, Clara Butt, and wanted a work which she could premiere. So he crafted Sea Pictures, based on five poems by different authors, each offering a different response to the ocean. A work noted for its drama, serenity and richness, the soloist will be the Northern Ireland mezzo, Sarah Richmond.

Tchaikovsky described his Symphony No. 6 as ‘the best thing I have ever composed or will compose.’ It presents the culmination of the composer’s thoughts on life and love, subjects on which this tortured individual had plenty to say, while leading a symphony orchestra to bear its soul and casting a spell on audiences like no other symphony of its era. Andrew Litton conducts this pivotal symphony, having navigated the stormy waters of Wagner’s Prelude to The Flying Dutchman, and is joined by the Orchestra’s Solo Cello Mats Lidström in the performance of his own concerto marking the centenary of the birth of Robert F Kennedy.
