When her latest conquest is given a magical ring that reveals this reality, the illusion begins to collapse. Julius Caesar and Cleopatra are one of the most famous love couples in human history. It's no wonder, then, that artists from all disciplines—from art to theater to film—have been inspired by the passionate relationship between the Roman general and the Egyptian pharaoh. The most impressive musical interpretation was achieved 300 years ago by George Frideric Handel in his opera "Giulio Cesare in Egitto," which, with its rich instrumentation and numerous musical ideas, remains one of the milestones of Baroque heroic opera. Now, the work will be performed for the first time in concert at the Elbphilharmonie with a prominent cast.

Giulio Cesare has defeated his enemy Pompeo and chased him all the way to Egypt. Against Caesare's will, however, Pompeo was then executed by the Egyptian king Tolomeo. Italy has always been a place of longing. For centuries, the country and its ancient cultural treasures have served as a source of inspiration for poets and thinkers. Artists and composers - mostly young men from good families - traditionally set off for the south in their youth and brought home groundbreaking ideas that constantly renewed local art. Georg Friedrich Handel's cantata "Il Delirio amoroso" was written at the beginning of his study trip in Rome in 1707, but the 22-year-old could not get enough of Italy - his trip lasted an incredible four years! Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy stopped off in the same cities more than a century later: Venice, Florence, Rome and Naples, among others, inspired him to write his "Italian" symphony. It exudes a light, southern charm and conjures up images of his journey.

What could be better for the Advent and Christmas season than the festive music of the late Baroque? With our Advent concerts, we invite you to the historic town hall, located directly on the main market, in the heart of Nuremberg's picturesque old town. In addition to famous orchestral works, two of the most popular trumpet concerts are also on the program in 2024 - radiant brass splendor with the American James Vaughen, deputy principal trumpeter of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and winner of the 2023 Aeolus Wind Competition. The former conductor from Munich's Gärtnerplatz, Andreas Puhani, who has long been associated with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, will conduct from the harpsichord.

A shrewd politician, a jilted bride disguised as a man, and three upper crust, eager to marry gentlemen make for all kinds of confusion in Handel’s tragicomedy. The libretto drew on texts by the Roman poet Silvio Stampiglia, who prefered writing silly stories and biting comedy to moralising plots and pathos. His work’s got nothing to do with Partenope, the last Siren Odysseus encountered on his Odyssey. In Handel’s opera she’s foundress and Queen of Naples, who’s being courted by three men. The first, shy Armindo, waits a long time before declaring his love for the Queen. The second, Emilio, arrives with his army, ordering the Queen to choose between marriage or war. Partenope beats him in battle, has him arrested, offering him friendship instead.

Arvo Pärt's music is in many ways a rebellion against post-war classical music, which, roughly speaking, meant louder, faster, bigger and more of everything. Pärt's music is anything but – it is gentle, slow and insists on repetition and silence. The Sound of Nature: The British composer George Fenton has created an equally impressive soundtrack for the BBC's visually stunning nature documentary series. His "Planet Earth" music is performed live in concert, surrounded by the other elements of fire, air and water. The German baroque grandmaster Georg Friedrich Händel will perform his "Fireworks Music", which was commissioned by the British King George II and first impressed audiences as open-air music in London's Green Park in 1749. The great US film composer Max Steiner breathes a completely different atmosphere in his title music for the legendary film classic "Gone with the Wind" and the stirring Czech romantic Antonín Dvořák also contributes a spookily beautiful fairytale water music with his symphonic poem "The Water Sprite".

Join us for an enchanting evening of brass music as the BRSO Academy and the Hermann-Levi-Akademie des Staatsorchesters present "Polished Brass - orchestra academies invite." This special concert will take place on Tuesday, 25th April 2023, at 7:00 pm in the vibrant setting of Munich's Werksviertel-Mitte, Technikum.

The evening's program promises a diverse range of compositions, starting with the majestic "Solomon: Entry of the Queen of Sheba HW 67 Act III Sinfonia" by Georg Friedrich Händel, followed by spirited "Dances from Terpsichore" arranged by NoPhilBrass from Michael Praetorius. The audience will be treated to Maurice Ravel's "Alborada del gracioso" and Johann Sebastian Bach's "Concert for Organ d-Minor BWV 596 after A. Vivaldi's L'Estro armonico op. 3 No. 11."
