Dvořák is the favorite composer of many classical music fans and orchestras alike. His music plays well – and is pleasant to listen to. It is often lighthearted, comfortable, and full of life. The Czech national classic is represented twice in our concert – with two concert overtures, one of which poetically captures rural moods and views, the other sparklingly immerses itself in a turbulent carnival festivities. Brahms' profound A minor concerto, the so-called "Double Concerto," features two soloists – a work tailor-made for our brotherly soloist duo of Claudio and Oscar Bohórquez. The two also plays a role in Schubert's Symphony in B minor. It consists of two movements, not four like a conventional symphony, which is why it is nicknamed the Unfinished . Nevertheless, it is a complete masterpiece. It moves forward with double the force.

This concert of beautiful duets and trios is a celebration of friendship, community and a shared love of music.  For twelve years, Lorna, Jenny and Rhian have played together in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. This concert will be recorded for CD and all proceeds from the recording will go towards the PSO Musicians’ Care Fund, chaired by Rhian Kenny. The mission of the Fund is to provide musical experiences to all children, regardless of the ability of their family or school district to pay. Additionally, our broader flute community will also be represented as members of Pittsburgh Flute Academy, led by Wendy Kumer, will serenade the audience on arrival.

Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra is joined by some of the world’s greatest aerial artists in a one-of-a-kind performance spectacular, just in time for Halloween. Carnevolar: DéComposition is a partnership with Emerald City Trapeze Arts and the School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts, featuring a world-class flying trapeze act and other awe-inspiring aerial arts such as silks, contortion, and Chinese pole. The orchestra is expanded in size for this program, conducted by Geoffrey Larson.

When 18-year-old Yunchan Lim won the 2022 Van Cliburn Competition with Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto, conductor Marin Alsop had tears in her eyes. The jury was no less moved by what they had just heard. Here was someone who simply played differently: powerful and tender, mature and electrifying at the same time, as juror Stephen Hough put it. His colleague Jean-Efflam Bavouzet admitted in astonishment: “I was simply speechless.” The young Korean’s career took off like a rocket afterward — despite the fact that he avoids all showmanship and lives solely for the music, like a priest for God. He now makes his Lucerne Festival debut with Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, a work that shifts between Basque folk color and Mozartian elegance. It promises to be an event. The Czech Philharmonic will partner with him and bookend his appearance with two signature works from their homeland. Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov will open the evening with the quintessential Czech classic, Bedřich Smetana’s world-famous Vltava. And after intermission comes Antonín Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony, arguably his most heroic.

The Philharmonie Hamburg was founded in 2003 by professional freelance musicians from around the globe. Since then, the orchestra has earned and maintained a leading position in the North German music scene. The orchestra sees itself as dynamic, able to expand from smaller chamber ensembles to a large symphony orchestra with choir. However, at its core, the orchestra has always remained a chamber orchestra, which has changed little since its foundation and is highly rehearsed.

The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra will appear in an unusual format – a Concert in the Dark organised for the Czech Radio Foundation’s Světluška project. The audience listens in complete darkness and focuses entirely on sound, colour, and space. The programme opens with Bedřich Smetana’s symphonic poem Vltava, followed by the intimate and lyrical Adagietto from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.
