Acclaimed conductor Rimma Sushanskaya – the last pupil of David Oistrakh – and the National Symphony Orchestra perform a series of concerts here at Cadogan Hall, opening with this programme titled ‘Northern Lights and New World’, a captivating exploration of national identity through music.

Sibelius’ intensely patriotic Finlandia is a powerful symphonic poem, a stirring declaration of national identity that has resonated with audiences for generations.

The Orchestra welcomes violinist Mathilde Milwidsky for Norwegian composer Johan Svendsen’s lyrical Romance, showcasing the instrument’s rich and expressive capabilities, and the first half concludes with Sibelius’ Karelia Suite, a vivid and folk-inspired evocation of the region’s history and landscape

Our idea of ​​Scandinavia is shaped by images of endless forests, pristine lakes and fjords, rugged mountains, clear and bright summers, and icy winters. This fascinating landscape also shapes art, from folk tales to paintings. In its autumn program, the Rhein-Ruhr Philharmonie focuses on this special atmosphere, which the "sound poets of the North" uniquely translate into music. Carl Nielsen, Johan Svendsen, Hugo Alfvén, Jean Sibelius, and Edvard Grieg draw on a rich repertoire of folk music, ancient myths, and legends.

Pekka Kuusisto conducts the Oslo Philharmonic and Ung Filharmoni in a concert featuring two musical interpretations of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet—Johan Svendsen’s Concert Overture and Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet music. Tine Thing Helseth is the soloist in a new trumpet concerto written for her by Nico Muhly.

Alpesh Chauhan is the conductor at the Oslo Philharmonic’s folk festival at The Palace Square. The orchestra has a tradition of concerts outdoors, almost as long as the orchestra itself. They have performed at Holmenkollen, The City Hall Square, and Myraløkka more recently, before the first Palace Square concert in 2017. This is our sixth concert in front of the Royal Palace; you do not need a ticket. Welcome!

Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4 “The Inextinguishable” was not named for the symphony itself, but according to Nielsen refers to “the elemental will to live.” Composed during WWI, the piece appeals to a fight for life during a time where so many perished in trenches across Europe. This same elemental will to live persist not only in times of pain, but also during times of joy and struggles towards greatness. Svendsen’s “Norwegian Artist’s Carnival” welcomes listeners into springtime merriment while Sibelius’s Violin Concerto’s technical complexity demands the most of both the soloist and orchestra to bring the concerto to fruition.
