Highlighting the event are performances by world-renowned soloists, including violin virtuoso Isabelle Faust and the innovative silent performer Hildur Elísa Jónsdóttir. The concert series will take place at two prestigious venues: Usher Hall in Edinburgh on November 1st and Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow on November 2nd. Sibelius crafts a symphony from sounds of ice and rock; Errollyn Wallen paints the skies as seen from a Scottish lighthouse; and star violinist Isabelle Faust soars like a bird across a Nordic seascape. And that’s not the half of it! With startlingly beautiful new sounds from Copenhagen and Glasgow, prepare to be astonished.

Legend has it that as a child, Mozart was terrified by the sheer volume and force of the trumpet’s sound. At the apex of his genius, however, he included a pair of them in his final, immortal “Jupiter” Symphony, where they are used to thrilling effect. This program joins that work with his 40th Symphony — darker and more poignant in mood. Star trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth brings the soul of the trumpet — brilliant and delicately burnished — to our stage in two luminous showpieces. Helseth captures Haydn’s delightful good humor and Bent Sørenson’s playful music in a concerto that was composed especially for her.

The concerts are composed for the occasion by the musicians themselves according to personal taste and according to which works they think challenge and emphasize their combination.

Tonight's concert is framed by two of the most masterful and famous works ever to come out of Russia. Tchaikovsky's 6th symphony, nicknamed “Pathétique,” ​​was written in 1893, when Tchaikovsky returned home from a three-week concert tour in the United States, rich and world-famous, but also mournful, melancholic and weighed down by nerves, stress and performance anxiety. The symphony premiered just nine days before the composer's death and has therefore ever since been surrounded by speculation about what the music's connection to death is - and what Tchaikovsky actually died of (cholera is the most likely theory). The 6th is one of his most soul-shattering works with strong emotional resonance and a consistently dark and intense atmosphere – but also contrasted by great, lyrical romance in the first movement and dancing joy in the second movement's waltz in 5/4 time. It is not the work of a depressed composer who has reached the end of his life – depressed people don't write depressed symphonies, they don't write anything at all! - but Tchaikovsky turns the traditional, Beethovenian development - from struggle to victory - on its head and lets the music slowly die out and the harsh and painful aspects of life have the last word.

The debut concert is build around the two countries that have influenced Jonas' education as a musician the most: Spain and Denmark.

Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 has the reputation of being the world's most difficult piano concerto. The technical demands are sky-high with light runs and resounding chords, but the concert also requires enormous musicality and communication skills. Tonight's soloist, the Georgian star Khatia Buniatishvili, has both in abundance.

DR Koncerthuset

Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3 is one of the Russian composer's best works. Melodic intensity meets a virtuosity unlike any other, with cascades of chords and effortless elegance. It is demanding music for both the orchestra and soloist Khatia Buniatishvili, but also a work that can fill the heart with the greatest emotions.

There is an indomitable and yes, unquenchable vitality that characterizes Nielsen's Symphony No. 4. The DR Symphony Orchestra and Fabio Luisi's latest recording of Nielsen's best-known symphony has attracted great attention internationally, and it has been written into the program when the orchestra embarks on its anniversary tour .

In Aftenland, Bent Sørensen mixes the nocturnal silence and view he remembers from growing up in Zealand with New York's nightlife seen from above. Silence and activity go into each other, and melodic fragments emerge like lights in the night.

A major highlight in each of Carnegie Hall’s past three seasons has been the Danish String Quartet’s Doppelgänger project, in which the ensemble pairs a Schubert string-quartet masterpiece with a new work inspired by it. The quartet’s most recent performance was described by The New York Times as “ensemble music at its finest.” The Danish String Quartet now concludes the four-year series by pairing Schubert’s towering String Quartet in G Major with a New York premiere by Bent Sørensen. When this program premiered at Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw, critics raved that “Sørensen’s work will surely assimilate into the classic repertoire” (Bachtrack).
