Opera North presents a thrilling new production of Richard Wagner's "The Flying Dutchman," set to captivate audiences from 1 February to 28 March 2025. This tempestuous music drama, directed by Annabel Arden and designed by Joanna Parker, embarks on a journey through Wagner's musical universe, starting with the bracing horn calls and culminating in the resplendent moments of transfiguration.

The story unfolds at sea and on land, intertwining the fate of a cursed ship's captain, doomed to wander the ocean until Judgement Day, with that of a woman dreaming of escape from a world devoid of vision and compassion. Obsessed with the legend of the Flying Dutchman, whose soul can only be redeemed by love, the narrative explores whether Senta and the Dutchman will find salvation or catastrophe in each other.

Featuring a cast led by Robert Hayward as the Dutchman and Sinéad Campbell Wallace as Senta, the opera is sung in German with English subtitles, ensuring an accessible and immersive experience. The production boasts a running time of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes and will tour prestigious venues including Leeds Grand Theatre, Newcastle Theatre Royal, The Lowry in Salford Quays, Theatre Royal Nottingham, and Hull New Theatre.
