The Nutcracker is a winter tradition at the New National Theatre Tokyo -- a long-beloved work evolving through different versions over the years since the theatre first opened. In the 2025/2026 Season, English choreographer Will Tuckett has created an original new production for the New National Theatre Tokyo. Developing not only in ballet but also in theatre and cross-genre works mixing various other artistic forms, Will Tuckett has won numerous awards, including an Olivier Award, and is globally active. This is the second work that he has created for the National Ballet of Japan, following the world premiere of The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2023. Together with Colin Richmond, the set and costume designer who also worked on The Tragedy of Macbeth, Tuckett creates a sweet and colourful world for The Nutcracker. Set in an enchanted world, the story follows Prince Tamino on his daring quest to rescue Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, who is held captive by Sarastro, the Priest of the Sun. Accompanied by Papageno, a bird-catcher in search of love, their journey unfolds into a discovery that challenges their perceptions of good and evil, day and night. This production promises to immerse audiences in the timeless tale and the beauty of Mozart’s music, featuring the full orchestra and chorus of Opera North, albeit in a condensed format.

"The Magic Flute Lite" will be performed in English, with English subtitles, ensuring accessibility for all. The opera is set to tour various prestigious venues, including Leeds Grand Theatre, Newcastle Theatre Royal, The Lowry in Salford Quays, and Theatre Royal in Nottingham, from 20 February to 20 March 2025. Each performance will last approximately 90 minutes, including one interval.

Ticket prices start from £16, with various discounts available, including season ticket packages, under 30s memberships, and special rates for those new to opera. Booking fees may apply and prices vary by venue.
