Serving as the Blodgett Artists-in-Residence at Harvard University and as faculty members in the Harvard Department of Music, the Grammy Award-winning Parker Quartet, renowned for its dynamic interpretations and polished, expansive colors, has rapidly distinguished itself as one of the preeminent ensembles of its generation.  Collaborating and partnering with some of the leading musicians, the Parker Quartet approaches all of its projects with an exceptionally thoughtful intellectual and musical rigor and full, emotional commitment. Founded and based in Boston, the Parker Quartet’s numerous honors include winning the Concert Artists Guild Competition, the Grand Prix and Mozart Prize at France’s Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, and Chamber Music America’s prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award.

Brilliance, passion, expression, and more are in this concert featuring violinist Vadim Gluzman, playing the 1690 ‘ex-Leopold Auer’ Stradivari. He will join YOUR Symphony to dazzle you with Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto which was written for his friend, the great David Oistrakh. You’ll be on the edge of your seat as you experience the passionate opening, a lyrical mid-section, to a virtuosic finale in this modern-era masterwork. The evening will close with Tchaikovsky’s beloved Second Symphony.

Traversing rich and varied musical landscapes, this concert laments the dramatic ecological loss of bees and the associated acoustic loss (referencing its musical predecessor Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee) and presents a tapestry of a thousand flowers in the constantly shimmering gestures of Martinaityte’s sonic garden. Silvestrov’s Postludium, rippling with nostalgia and swirling memories, belies Vladimir Putin’s contention that Ukraine doesn’t exist as a country with its own cultural identity. In memoriam, we honour the late Kaija Saariaho performing her fabulous musical voyage through evocative sound worlds guided by texts of the great Persian poet Rumi.

Among the world’s leading violinists over the past 5 decades, Gidon Kremer has established and sustained a worldwide reputation as one of the most original and compelling artists of his generation. He has appeared on almost every major concert stage as recitalist and with the most celebrated orchestras of Europe and North America, and has worked with many of the greatest conductors of the past half century.  After winning a series of prestigious awards, including the Queen Elisabeth Competition and first prize in both the 1969 Paganini and 1970 Tchaikovsky International Competitions, his career erupted.

The Slavic Department and the Program in Russian, Eastern European and Eurasian Studies present a one hour recital with pianist Francine Kay featuring works by Dvořák, Suk, Kaprálová, Silvestrov and Chopin. Admission is free, but the audience is requested to donate to humanitarian relief for Ukraine.

Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes returns to Davies Symphony Hall for a reflective solo recital. The program begins with Alexander Vustin’s Lamento, a work punctuated by echoes of birdsong. Leoš Janáček’s Piano Sonata 1.X.1905 follows with a tribute to a worker slain during demonstrations in 1905, while Valentin Silvestrov’s Bagatelle is a glimmering melodic miniature. Ludwig van Beethoven delves into dynamic introspection with his late-in-life Piano Sonata, and the evening finishes with fresh joie de vivre in the radiant palette of Antonín Dvořák’s Poetic Tone Pictures.

French pianist Hélène Grimaud is a deeply passionate and committed musical artist with an original and probing mind who takes no note for granted. Her poetic expression and peerless technical control have drawn comparisons to Martha Argerich and Jorge Bolet. Her contribution to and impact on the world of classical music were recognized by the French government with admission to the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur (France’s highest decoration) at the rank of Chevalier (Knight). In her role as a passionate wildlife conservationist, Grimaud established the Wolf Conservation Center in upper New York State, which offers education about wolves, their relationship to the environment, and the human role in protecting their future.

This tribute to one of the currently compositional scene most relevant authors also becomes a tribute to the great Ukrainian musical tradition by an intellectual like Maestro Berman, born in Russia, formed in the former-Soviet Union, initially emigrated to Israel, now a US citizen: certainly a citizen of the world.

Pianist Hélène Grimaud takes center stage in a recital that highlights her breathtaking intuition and inventiveness. The program sparkles with miniatures, including Claude Debussy’s bewitching Clair de lune, alongside the sleek minimalism of Erik Satie’s Gnossiennes, tuneful gems by contemporary Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov, and spellbinding mazurakas and waltzes by piano royalty, Frédéric Chopin. The program concludes in spectacular fashion with Robert Schumann’s Kreisleriana, a kaleidoscopic spectrum of shifting moods regarded by many (including Schumann) as the composer’s finest composition.
