Martín Bach

Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts

»Bach is the beginning and end of all music «, the composer Max Reger is said to have commented on the baroque master. His motets are imbued with a universal spirit and creative force, and the Sächsisches Vokalensemble and Matthias Jung celebrate Bach’s 340th birthday as befits him. In 2022, these musicians released a highly acclaimed recording of Bach’s motets, quickly hailed as a benchmark. Unlike the cantatas, the motets were not written for Sunday services, but for private use on various occasions. This is also the reason why the individual works are so varied, despite all of them being beholden to the 16th-century tradition of vocal polyphony. No better performers for these effective pieces, in which contrapuntal and concertizing elements, chorale technique and double-choir structures meet in a virtuoso manner, could be imagined than the Dresden-based choir and its conductor!

VIS shares the hidden treasures in these works, offering a glimpse into the creative process of the composers. It is fascinating to think about the stories behind these pieces and why they were not finished, remained unpublished or not performed during the composer’s life… yet they have become beloved pieces in the orchestral repertoire.
