Every year, SFCM hosts the Highsmith Competition, an internal composition contest that grants the winner a performance of the submitted work by the Conservatory Orchestra. This nocturnal hymn explores the a cappella literature with contributions on the theme of "Ruins and Hope." The essence: Just as humanity carries within itself the will to destroy, it is also capable of reconciliation and hope. St. Peter's Church, as an architectural representation of destruction and reconstruction, is the perfect concert venue for this program.

The acclaimed vocal ensemble Gentlemen Singers has accepted an invitation to our special concert in May. In the opening notes of Echos of Folksongs by Leoš Janáček, we can hear the young composer influenced by folk music, his travels in Moravia and his first experiences as a choirmaster.

In stark contrast there are the Brigand Songs commissioned from Bohuslav Martinů at the end of his life by the Prague Teachers’ Choir (I) and the Moravian Teachers’ Choir (II).

For the May concert, Gentlemen Singers, together with the violinist Lucia Fulka Kopsová, will also perform Zdeněk Lukáš’s song cycle Spring is Coming, whose choral works are inspired by folk motifs and are characterized by melodic inventiveness, rhythmic vitality and ability to express strong emotions.

The new chief conductor of the MDR Radio Choir charts musical paths through European landscapes in this nocturnal performance. The journey takes us from the cold north to the warm south, through centuries of music history, and across genres and styles. An exciting and colorful concert, with echoes from Josep Vila i Casañas's Catalan homeland.
