The Sphinx Organization is a social justice organization dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts. Focused on increasing representation of Black and Latinx artists in classical music and recognizing excellence, Sphinx programs serve beginner students to seasoned classical music professionals, as well as cultural entrepreneurs and administrators. Based in Detroit, Michigan, but with nationwide reach, Sphinx envisions a day where the classical music field looks like our communities: where every young person has the opportunity to express themselves and learn classical music; where audiences reflect the people we see on our streets; and where leadership—on stage and off—includes all deserving voices.

GRAMMY® Award-nominated composer and bandoneon player JP Jofre stars in this imaginative juxtaposition of contemporary and classic influences. Performing his own concerto for cello and bandoneon with acclaimed soloist Michael Katz, Jofre’s mesmerizing artistry brings new sound worlds to the historic expanses of the Michigan Theater. Guest conductor Joshua Gersen directs music by the “wistfully idiosyncratic and contemplative” composer and multi-instrumentalist Angélica Negrón, before Brahm’s masterful Symphony No. 4 closes the program in a poignant summary of the composer’s worldview and lifetime of achievement.

Curated by Juan Pablo Contreras, Episode 6 celebrates composers from around the Americas who reside and work in the melting pot of the United States, while their musical influences and flavors originate from their native countries like Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay. Also featured is the world premiere of Juan Pablo’s “Mariachitlán” for Piano Four-Hands.

How are composers able to capture the hustle and bustle of the city? Join Parlando as it explores the sounds of the city, from Seoul to Berlin to Buenos Aires. The program includes Unsuk Chin’s kaleidoscopic Gougalon, Erwin Schulhoff’s jazzy Suite for Chamber Orchestra, and Astor Piazzolla’s Nuevo Tango Suite Punta del Este, featuring bandoneon soloist JP Jofre.

Cellist Tommy Mesa returns to THE 222 this season with bandoneon player and composer JP Jofre combining their considerable talents in a special program of tango music by Astor Piazzola and transcriptions by Jofre himself, one of Argentina’s foremost composers and bandoneon players.
