Mozart wrote his only concerto for clarinet in the space of about ten days, when he was at the height of his powers, and only two months before his tragically early death.  It is a glorious work: the first great concerto for the instrument, and some would say still the greatest, which displays the range and agility of the clarinet as well as its velvety and soulful qualities. Mendelssohn’s Fourth Symphony is extroverted from the outset, conjuring up the sunny skies and landscapes of the Italian countryside in a virtually flawless assembly of airy and fiery dances, never letting the excitement lapse for a moment. Truly Italian, Rossini’s youthful sonata is a joyous and overtly dramatic example of the Italian tradition of instrumental belcanto with its rapid flourishes, whilst Mascagni’s passionate intermezzo never fails to pull at the heart strings.

This lunchtime programme takes us into the magical world of Cinderella and Hansel and Gretel, courtesy of Rossini and Engelbert Humperdinck. Rossini wrote La Cenerentola when he was 25 years old, following the success of The Barber of Seville, and its overture is characteristically vivid and tuneful. Humperdinck's response to Hansel and Gretel -- the German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm -- is illuminating and this 5-movement Suite, brought together by the American conductor Gerard Schwarz, includes The Witch's Ride, The Gingerbread House, The Witch's Waltz and finally to A Dream Pantomime.

The camp offers a comprehensive program designed to nurture young talents through daily private voice lessons, vocal coaching, and classes in movement, acting, dance, and fight choreography. A highlight of the camp is the opportunity to rehearse and perform an opera scene, culminating in a recital and theater scene performance for friends and family. The overture begins with a slow introduction featuring an exposed oboe solo.
