All the characteristics we value most highly in Tchaikovsky’s music are present in his Sixth Symphony: imaginative orchestration, drama, delicious themes and sweeping emotive power. Whether or not the symphony hides some specific message, hinting at his personal melancholy and untimely death, it is clearly a work of deep and turbulent pathos and remains testament to a musical genius. Written at the end of Dvořák’s three-year contract in New York, the Cello Concerto reflects some of his American experiences but is at the same time filled with the spirit of his beloved Bohemia where he longed to return. It contains some of his most memorable melodies and its glowing orchestration is an excellent foil to the richness of the cello; the result is most delicate and translucent. His passionate Violin Concerto – long neglected, but now championed – is an ideal example of his captivating, rhapsodic music that touches the emotions and inspires the intellect.

For over thirty-five years, they have been acclaimed in the Netherlands and abroad for their virtuosic playing, brilliant arrangements and innovative stage presentation.

Chih-Yi Chen has been on the faculty of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music since 2003 and is the associate chair of the Chamber and Collaborative Music Department. Chen was a recipient of the 2023 Indiana University Trustees Teaching Award. She has also been on the faculty of the Indiana University Summer String Academy for more than two decades. Her versatile qualities as a collaborative partner, chamber musician, soloist and teacher have contributed to a distinguished career, nationally and internationally. Highlights of the 2022-23 season include concerts with violinists Sirena Huang, Richard Lin, Luke Hsu, and Ioana Cristina Goicea, as well as performances and master classes in Taiwan and Argentina. Chen has been performing with International Violin Competition of Indianapolis Laureates since 2003, when she was first invited to perform with Barnabás Kelemen. She has served as an official pianist for the competition since the 9th Quadrennial in 2014 and was awarded special recognition at the 2018 competition for Best Performances of the Beethoven and Mozart sonatas. Her early work with the talented young violinists of the IU Violin Virtuosi, directed by renowned pedagogue Mimi Zweig, led to performances in France, Spain, Sweden, Italy, Japan, and throughout the United States. Among the numerous musicians with whom she has collaborated are violinists Jaime Laredo, Mihaela Martin, Kyoko Takezawa, Sarah Kapustin, Andrés Cárdenes, Pavel Berman, Liviu Prunaru, Augustin Hadelich, Clara-Jumi Kang, and Kerson Leong; violists Atar Arad, Brian Chen, and Masumi Per Rostad; cellists Sharon Robinson, Peter Stumpf, and Bion Tsang; clarinetists James Campbell, Howard Klug, and Gábor Varga; bassoonist William Ludwig; and flutist Thomas Robertello. An enchanting collaboration with Madison Ballet takes the stage for our third Masterworks concert of the season. Opening with the music of British composer Oliver Davis, the orchestra will perform nine movements of the Liberty suite as the stage comes alive with original choreography by Madison Ballet's Artistic Director and Choreographer, Ja' Malik. Witness the seamless integration of movement and sound with this pairing, a follow up from a previous collaboration at Concerts on the Square with another work by Oliver Davis. Formed in 1994 by Christian and Tanja Tetzlaff, along with Hanna Weinmeister and Elisabeth Kufferath, the ensemble has become one of the most sought-after quartets of its generation. Their performances are characterized by what The New York Times describes as "supremely lyrical, exactingly detailed playing combined with impeccable balance and unanimity," resulting in truly overwhelming musical experiences.

The quartet's repertoire for this performance includes Mendelssohn's String Quartet in A Minor, Op. 13, Widmann's String Quartet No. 2, and Dvořák's String Quartet in A Flat Major, Op. 105. Maestro Kellen Gray’s program explores beautiful memories and outdoor delights. Dvořák’s My Home was originally written to accompany a patriotic theatrical production, and for it the composer draws from the song “Where is my Home?,” which today is the Czech national anthem. Similarly, American composer Florence Price’s 1934 piano concerto uses the hymns and spirituals of her youth as the source for her best-known concerto, performed by the internationally-acclaimed Stewart Goodyear, a Tallahassee favorite! Rounding out the program is Beethoven’s gleeful and spirited Fourth Symphony, written at the country estate of his patron Prince Lichnowsky as he enjoyed a daily tonic of outdoor delights—sunshine, warmth, fresh air, and the sounds of nature.
