Fireworks indoors?! Indeed!  The quintessential love theme, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy is full of sweeping melodies that perfectly evoke the breathless passion of the two young lovers.  When Prokofiev premiered his Fifth Symphony in 1945—conducting it himself in the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory—Prokofiev considered it the culminating accomplishment of his career, conceived “as glorifying the grandeur of the human spirit … praising the free and happy man—his strength, his generosity, and the purity of his soul.” Others had even higher praise: after the U.S. premiere by Serge Koussevitzky and the Boston Symphony, Prokofiev was pictured on the cover of Time magazine, and Koussevitzky called the work “the greatest musical event in many, many years. A tragic love story is perfect for the drama of ballet and opera – if not for the story’s protagonists! Prokofiev’s ballet depicts the most infamous ‘star-cross’d lovers’ of them all, Romeo and Juliet, with music that is a brilliant realisation of Shakespeare’s play and some of Prokofiev’s most memorable and instantly appealing work, while Wagner’s Prelude from Tristan und Isolde is a lushly hypnotic, yearning depiction of two more tragic lovers, this time from Renaissance romance. Pianist Clare Hammond performs Kenneth Hesketh’s Uncoiling the River, a piece which loops round itself, sinuous and labyrinthine, and explores our perception of the passing of time.

The brilliance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3, with its electrifying cadenzas and lyrical brilliance performed by Sacramento native Parker Van Ostrand, is the midpoint of an evening that opens with Jessie Montgomery’s Records from a Vanishing City, inspired by an Angolan lullaby. Completing the program, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, with its harmonic and rhythmic twists, is pure twentieth-century inventiveness and pure Stravinsky.

Amongst Dvořák’s greatest achievements were his Symphonic Poems, vivid musical renderings of gripping, often gruesome folk tales. Kahchun Wong and the Hallé first met in a thrilling performance of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony – see the magic that started their journey together.

Much of Shostakovich’s extraordinary output was profoundly marked by politics and the judgements of censors. His monumental Fifth Symphony, one of the greatest and most powerful of twentieth-century orchestral works was, supposedly, ‘A Soviet artist’s response to just criticism’. It is now known that this popular symphony was composed as a work of defiance so subtle that no-one realised at the time.
