Classical Roots has celebrated the contributions of African-American composers and artists for nearly fifty years. This season, we hear new music from Shelley Washington, who focuses "on exploring emotions and intentions by finding their root cause." Saxophonist Steven Banks, "one of the transformational musicians of the twenty-first century" (Seen and Heard International) performs a new concerto written for him by Grammy Award–winner Billy Childs.

Students from the Colburn School’s Ballet and Modern Dance programs join forces for two wide-ranging programs of musically-driven choreography, with music by composers including W.A. Mozart, J.S. Bach, Shelley Washington, Glenn Branca, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Student musicians from Colburn’s renowned Music Academy will collaborate with the dancers. Join us for these two stunning dance performances featuring choreography by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and Ballet Chair Kelly Ann Sloan, Modern Dance Chair Tamsin Carlson, and Dance Dean Silas Farley.

Celebrate International Women's Day with an enchanting evening of music at the Arts Club of Washington. Join us on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM for a special concert featuring the acclaimed Overlook Quartet and the talented pianist Sayaka Tanikawa. This event, co-presented by the Arts Club of Washington, promises to be a memorable night showcasing some of the most beloved works by composers Amy Beach, Florence Price, and Shelley Washington.

The Overlook Quartet, known for their breathtaking performances and dedication to a more representative musical tradition, will be joined by Sayaka Tanikawa, creating an unforgettable musical experience. The concert will take place in the historic setting of the Arts Club of Washington, located at 2017 I Street Northwest, Washington, DC, 20006. Doors open at 6:30 PM, allowing guests to enjoy beverages before the performance. A reception with light refreshments will follow, offering an opportunity to mingle and discuss the evening's performances.

- Piano Quintet in A minor c. 1935 by Florence Price
- "Say" 2016 by Shelley Washington
- Piano Quintet in F-sharp minor, Op. 67 1907 by Amy Beach
