"For the past few days, I've been pounding and trumpeting a lot inside me; I don't know what will come of it ," wrote Robert Schumann to his friend Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, announcing the first ideas for his new Symphony in C major. With the completion of the work, the Saxon Romantic composer had simultaneously overcome a severe depressive phase and was soon able to devote himself to his operatic project Genoveva . However, only the overture survived the repertoire. Ambitious and progressive, it is considered the best of the opera and surprises with its fresh gesture.

When Prokofiev composed his Fifth Symphony in the summer of 1944, the war in Europe was still raging. He described it as a tribute to “the generosity, strength and spiritual purity of the free and happy man.” For Prokofiev personally, it was a time of great creativity – but perhaps he sensed what lay ahead for his homeland, the Soviet Union. The symphony’s playful, fast-paced movements are set in stark contrast to the slow third movement, steeped in unease and anxiety. After the war ended, tensions between East and West escalated, and the Cold War soon took hold.

What would the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival be without "its" castles and manor houses, which the team explores and performs in throughout the country? For its 20th anniversary, the festival launched the "Sleeping Beauties" series to highlight historical monuments that were in decline and urgently needed to be saved. The series was held for a second time in 2020, and now, for its 35th anniversary, we're picking up the thread again.

Igor Stravinsky’s wild Russian folk-fable of a ballet The Firebird, retains the power to shock and enthrall into its second century. Kicking off the program is the 2002 orchestral piece Chorale—based on the familiar Bach chorale “Es ist genug”—from Esa-Pekka Salonen’s longtime friend Magnus Lindberg. Alban Berg’s last completed score and probably his most famous, the Violin Concerto functions both as an elegy for a surrogate daughter who died too soon, and as a requiem for himself.

And Schumann, struggling with illness, finds the warm light of dawn in the murmured fanfares of the Second Symphony.

Everyone knows the tale of Felix Mendelssohn’s trip to the Hebrides, and the sonic enchantment that emerged from that (slightly choppy) boat trip to Fingal’s Cave. What more can we say? These isles sometimes have that effect on visitors. Jean Sibelius ran into fogbanks as his steamer took him to Britain, and you can hear them swirling around the expansive Finnish landscape of his sunlit Third Symphony. And Magnus Lindberg’s radiant First Violin Concerto was hailed as an instant classic after its premiere in 2006. Two of the most dynamic young stars in Finnish music – violinist Tami Pohjola and conductor Taavi Oramo – bring a special freshness and energy to music filled with sea air and northern light.
