A classically trained pianist with the creative spirit of a jazz performer, Aaron Diehl fuses together traditional pieces with fresh artistry as he interweaves multiple genres into one exquisite piano recital.  A graduate of Juilliard, Diehl was named the 2011 Cole Porter Fellow by American Pianists Association, in 2014 became the youngest ever Monterey Jazz Festival Commission Artist, and has released two critically acclaimed albums on the Mack Avenue Records label. He has collaborated with living masters across the music spectrum from jazz greats Wynton Marsalis and Benny Golson to 20th century classical titan Philip Glass.

Composer and clarinetist Derek Bermel brings together an extraordinary group of artists for an eclectic night of music of his own music – including the New York premiere of his String Quartet No. 2 – as well as works that have influenced him. Internationally recognized for his creativity, theatricality and virtuosity, Bermel is acclaimed for his “unambiguously luscious” music (The New York Times) that is “intricate, witty, clear-spoken, tender and extraordinarily beautiful (San Francisco Chronicle).

Join us for a mesmerizing evening dedicated to the legendary jazz icons Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis at the Symphony Hall, Birmingham, on Thursday, 20th March 2025, starting at 7:30 pm. This unique concert, titled "An Evening of Thelonious Monk & Miles Davis," promises to be an unforgettable experience as it brings a fresh perspective to the timeless compositions of these musical geniuses.

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) collaborates with the incredibly talented local saxophonist Xhosa Cole and his quartet, alongside the renowned jazz legend Guy Barker, to reinterpret the classic works of Monk and Davis. The evening will feature arrangements by Guy Barker and performances that breathe new life into the iconic pieces, ensuring a jazz experience like no other.

The full program includes a special set by the Xhosa Cole Quartet, with arrangements of Miles Davis's pieces by Guy Barker, and a segment titled "Thelonious Monk: Reimagined." Highlights of the night will include a 25-minute rendition of "Kind of Blue" and a comprehensive showcase of Monk's and Davis's repertoire, lasting approximately 50 minutes.

Tickets are priced between £26 and £62, with a per-ticket commission of £3.50 for tickets over £15 sold by B:Music. Attendees can also benefit from multi-buy discounts and reduced prices for students, 18-30s, under-18s, and benefit recipients.
