Immerse yourself in the captivating world of early opera with the Boston Early Music Festival's presentation of Francesca Caccini’s "Alcina" at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center. This remarkable event took place on Saturday, June 24, 2023, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience a pioneering work by Francesca Caccini, a contemporary of Monteverdi and one of the most influential musical figures of the Medici Court. Known for being the first woman composer to create an opera, Caccini's "Alcina" is celebrated for its wit, drama, and the challenging title role, originally performed by the composer herself.

"Alcina" tells the enchanting story of the sorceress Alcina, who, through her magical powers, transforms captives into plants and trees to decorate her island. The opera unfolds with the heroic Melissa's quest to rescue the warrior Ruggiero from Alcina's illusions and liberate the enchanted captives. This production was brought to life with the exquisite integration of Baroque dance, stunning costumes, and the exceptional talent of Grammy-winning singers and instrumentalists from the BEMF Chamber Opera Series.
