Our journey begins inland, where rivers run through landscapes and legends alike. River Rhythms features music shaped by flowing waters—from the grandeur of the Mississippi to the folk-infused currents of the Vltava. Ferde Grofé’s Mississippi Suite opens the concert with rich American imagery, followed by Anatoly Lyadov’s shimmering tone poem The Enchanted Lake, conducted by assistant conductor Eric Shen.

The viola emerges from the depths of the orchestra into the spotlight much less often than its high-pitched sister. The Englishman William Walton gave it the opportunity for a particularly grand performance with his concert. The warm tone of the solo instrument nestles here against a colorful orchestral part that can also be heard in the other two contributions to the program - the sparkling sound of Lyadov's "enchanted lake" or Stravinsky's ballet about the love-struck fairground puppet Petrushka. These fairy-tale sounds are brought to life by Marie Jacquot, designated chief conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra.

South Korean conductor Eun Sun Kim makes her BSO debut with a trio of pieces exploring innovation within tradition. Star pianist Inon Barnatan returns to Symphony Hall to take on one of Bartók’s final works, the Third Piano Concerto, a love letter to his wife and his home country. While living in poverty in New York having fled the onslaught of the Nazis into Hungary, Bartók’s creativity had stalled out, and his body was failing from a long illness. The concerto — not quite finished when he passed — is a more gentle and accessibly poetic work than his previous concerti, a summation of where Bartók’s style left him at the end of his life.

Prokofiev’s most popular Symphony, composed before the end of World War II, found the composer — hounded by Stalin’s Central Committee of the Communist Party — watching his back. Fiery harmonies reveal 20th century sensibilities, where big climaxes alternate with haunting melodies, brass and percussion explosions with exquisite lyricism, tragedy with triumph, sweeping you towards the gripping conclusion. DSO Principal Flute David Buck solos in Nielsen’s Concerto, showcasing not just the flute, but also in dialogue with “fellow instruments.”

Russia, 1905: crowds fill the streets, and a great nation teeters on the brink of revolution. Shostakovich’s massive Eleventh Symphony is one of those pieces that you simply have to hear live – and with the Orchestra’s incredible set of full-size church bells, it’ll sound even larger than life. Vasily Petrenko conducts it for the first time in Liverpool: a powerful contrast to the romance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, played by rising star Christian Li.

Riccardo Muti and the CSO open the 2023/24 Season with two pieces capturing the fairy-tale splendor of Russian music. Stravinsky’s suite from The Firebird uses a dynamic orchestral palette to depict infernal dances and a haunting lullaby. Liadov’s The Enchanted Lake is a softly iridescent portrait of a moonlit night. Composed at an Austrian lakeside resort, Brahms’ Second Symphony captivates with its warm, sunny melodies.

Once upon a time…Russia was always a land of storytellers. Why would its composers be any different? Today Ryan Wigglesworth opens that storybook and shares what comes out. There’s a witch in a hut with hen’s legs, and a lake that might harbour supernatural beings, or a whole lost city (anything’s possible in the magical sound-world of Prokofiev’s teacher Anatoly Lyadov). Things take a turn for the macabre and Death rides a general’s horse, as soprano Sophie Bevan sings Mussorgsky’s blackly comic songs. And then it’s over to Tchaikovsky, and a symphony of sorrow, joy and simply glorious melodies. “With desire and passion” wrote Tchaikovsky on the score of his Fifth Symphony, and you’re about to hear why.
