Jeffrey Zhao and Aaron Jin, winners of the prestigious Eastside Piano Competition, help open Cascade Symphony’s 64th season with piano concerti by Felix Mendelssohn and Edvard Grieg. Aaron was a gold medalist in the 2024 Seattle International Virtuoso competition. Jeffrey, gold medalist at the Pacific International Piano Competition, previously performed Rachmaninov with Cascade Symphony in 2022. The concert also includes Anatoly Liadov’s tone poem, Baba Yaga, the lushly beautiful “In the Garden” movement from Karl Goldmark’s “Rustic Wedding” Symphony, and concludes with the rarely performed 2nd Symphony by Dmitri Kabalevsky.

Moving from places physical to places imagined, Sibelius’s powerful homage to his homeland Finlandia precedes Lyadov’s impressionist fairytale symphonic poem The Enchanted Lake, before we visit Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe’s Kakadu, a colourful and vivid homage to an Australian national park.

Our journey begins inland, where rivers run through landscapes and legends alike. River Rhythms features music shaped by flowing waters—from the grandeur of the Mississippi to the folk-infused currents of the Vltava. Ferde Grofé’s Mississippi Suite opens the concert with rich American imagery, followed by Anatoly Lyadov’s shimmering tone poem The Enchanted Lake, conducted by assistant conductor Eric Shen.

On the Water: River Rhythms

The viola emerges from the depths of the orchestra into the spotlight much less often than its high-pitched sister. The Englishman William Walton gave it the opportunity for a particularly grand performance with his concert. The warm tone of the solo instrument nestles here against a colorful orchestral part that can also be heard in the other two contributions to the program - the sparkling sound of Lyadov's "enchanted lake" or Stravinsky's ballet about the love-struck fairground puppet Petrushka. These fairy-tale sounds are brought to life by Marie Jacquot, designated chief conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra.

South Korean conductor Eun Sun Kim makes her BSO debut with a trio of pieces exploring innovation within tradition. Star pianist Inon Barnatan returns to Symphony Hall to take on one of Bartók’s final works, the Third Piano Concerto, a love letter to his wife and his home country. While living in poverty in New York having fled the onslaught of the Nazis into Hungary, Bartók’s creativity had stalled out, and his body was failing from a long illness. The concerto — not quite finished when he passed — is a more gentle and accessibly poetic work than his previous concerti, a summation of where Bartók’s style left him at the end of his life.

Things take a turn for the macabre and Death rides a general’s horse, as soprano Sophie Bevan sings Mussorgsky’s blackly comic songs. And then it’s over to Tchaikovsky, and a symphony of sorrow, joy and simply glorious melodies. “With desire and passion” wrote Tchaikovsky on the score of his Fifth Symphony, and you’re about to hear why.
