MYE Students, who are selected by audition, have the opportunity to engage in a stimulating environment, while learning from U-M conductors, applied faculty, and graduate students.

The 2025–26 Season opens with two powerful, romantic musical statements: Rachmaninoff’s third piano concerto, rich in sweeping melodies and virtuosity, and Sibelius’s majestic Second Symphony, exuding emotion and an immense source of pride for Finland. Piano soloist Olga Kern, the first woman in more than 30 years to win the prestigious Van Cliburn competition, makes a welcome return to Tucson. Chávez’s short opener, Toccata, bursts with the rhythms and sounds of his native Mexico.

Celebrating the work of guest composer Gabriela Ortiz, this concert will feature her powerful Concierto Voltaje with timpani solo performance by MSU Professor of Percussion Gwendolyn Dease. This rhythmic concert also includes Symphony No. 2 (Sinfonía India) by Carlos Chávez, Sensemayá, for Orchestra by Silvestre Revueltas, and MSU Professor of Composition Ricardo Lorenz’s Todo Terreno, commissioned and premiered in 2022 by the LA Philharmonic. Carlos Miguel Prieto, celebrated as a rising star both domestically and abroad, was named 2019 Conductor of the Year by Musical America and is the foremost Mexican conductor of his generation. He serves as artistic director of México City’s Minería Symphony, which was founded in the 1970s and is widely regarded as the leading musical institution in México — one that regularly supports and programs Mexican composers. Housed at the Academia de Música del Palacio de Minería, the name honors the period from the 18th century when mining was one of the region’s most important economic activities.

Musical America’s 2019 Conductor of the Year Carlos Miguel Prieto makes a triumphant return to Kansas City stages with pianist Gabriela Montero and México City’s Minería [mee-neh-REE-ah] Symphony Orchestra of Mexico this season. The program includes Montero’s own piano concerto “The Latin Concerto,” Silvestre Revueltas’ massive work for expanded orchestra Night of the Mayas, a new piece by Gabriela Ortiz and Carlos Chávez’s Symphony No. 2.

The TSO is excited to once again be a part of the Consulate of Mexico in Tucson’s Mexican Independence Day Concert! This year’s concert will take place at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall, and will also include a Mexican Fiesta featuring Mexican cuisine and crafts offered by local traditional and small businesses from 5–7:00 p.m. on the plaza.

Concert Tickets are only available directly from the Consulate of Mexico in Tucson. Tickets will be available for pickup at the Consulate September 1–14 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Gabriela Montero, pianist, composer and activist, makes her Minnesota Orchestra debut as both composer and performer, playing her own Latin Piano Concerto, which Montero says “shows the complexities of South American life.” On the podium is conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto, who recorded the work with Montero in 2019. Exquisite colors and textures are braided throughout the entire program which also features Ravel’s Rapsodie espagnole, explores the music of indigenous Mexican cultures in Carlos Chávez’s Sinfonía India, and will have you dancing your way home after the brilliant Suite from The Three-Cornered Hat by Manuel de Falla.

Carlos Miguel Prieto is recognized as the foremost Mexican conductor of his generation. He possesses a wide-ranging repertoire, has led over 100 world premieres, and is a champion of American and Latin American composers. His recordings have received many honors, including an Opus Klassik award, inclusion in the Gramophone Critics’ Choice listing in 2017, and two Grammy nominations. Prieto also concurrently serves as Music Director for the Orchestra of the Americas alongside Gustavo Dudamel. </p><p>Now in its 19th season, the Colburn Orchestra is the flagship ensemble of the Colburn Conservatory of Music. Under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Yehuda Gilad, the Colburn Orchestra performs for Southern California audiences at venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, Ambassador Auditorium, Royce Hall, Segerstrom Concert Hall, and The Soraya. Since its inception, Gilad and the esteemed faculty at Colburn have invited guest conductors, soloists, and composers to work with the Colburn Orchestra, including James Conlon, Plácido Domingo, Michael Tilson Thomas, and others.

Known for his bold programming and artistic vision, Artistic Director finalist Michael Lewanski leads a powerful and eclectic program that bridges cultures, eras, and emotions. The evening begins with Carlos Chávez’s energetic Sinfonia India, followed by Jessie Montgomery’s luminous Hymn for Everyone. Acclaimed violinist MingHuan Xu takes center stage in John Corigliano’s haunting Red Violin Chaconne, a work of cinematic beauty and emotional depth. The concert concludes with the striking wit and youthful brilliance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1—a landmark debut from one of the 20th century’s most iconic voices.

The Lithuanian Symphony Wind Orchestra Chamber Ensemble presents a program specially prepared for this concert, “Latin Wind”, which will take you to the colorful and passionate rhythms of Latin America. At the concert, you will hear works by famous, but less frequently performed in our concert halls, composers from Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, and Argentina for wind ensembles of various compositions, covering a wide range of styles – from the energetic dance music intonations of Arturo Márquez and Aldemar Romero to the mystically colorful “Quarteto simbólico” by Villa-Lobos or the pieces of Silvestre Revueltas created in the spirit of modernism.
