The Southern Miss Jazz Sextet was started over 20 years ago by a group of graduate and undergraduate students and is the longest-running combo in the jazz studies program’s lengthy history.  It has changed personnel and sometimes instrumentation, but it remains true to its roots of exploring the sextet/septet sound and has garnered lots of praise. In 2007, the group was awarded the Outstanding University/College Combo at the University of North Texas Jazz Festival.  The sextet has also been well received at the Alcorn State University Jazz Festival, Bay Springs Jazz in the Grove Festival and other regional festivals. The current group is under the direction of Larry Panella with Jeremiah Parker on Alto Sax, Tim Crum on Tenor Sax, Joshua Hale on Vibes, Nicholas Mustin on Guitar, Pedro Areco on Bass, and Shawn Lawrence on Drums.
