One of America’s most eminent black composers of the early twentieth century, H. T. Burleigh wrote hundreds of art songs and introduced Antonin Dvořák to the spiritual. Southland Sketches, his suite for violin and piano, illustrates the American style that Burleigh did much to promulgate. By contrast, Dohnányi’s C minor Piano Quintet radiates high drama from first note to last. Britten’s second String Quartet, commissioned in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Henry Purcell’s death, was coincidentally composed following Britten’s recital tour of the newly-liberated concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen. Britten’s admiration for Purcell’s “clarity, brilliance, tenderness, and strangeness” as well as his horror of war’s depravity find voice in this deeply emotional work.

Winner of the 2022 prestigious Richard Tucker Award, Angel Blue has garnered international praise for her radiant, velvety voice and her portrayals of many of opera’s greatest heroines including Mimi in La Boheme, Violetta in La Traviata, and Tosca. She opened the Metropolitan Opera’s 2019/20 season as Bess in Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and also starred in the Grammy-winning recording from that production. Future engagements include headlining a new Metropolitan Opera production of Aida. She also enjoys an active concert and recital career. In this varied program, she’ll be joined by Grammy-nominated pianist Myra Huang, Head of Music at the Met’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and Director of musical administration and head coach for the Aspen Opera Theater and VocalARTS program. Be thrilled by one of opera’s most exciting voices in the intimate setting of Harris Concert Hall!
