Clarinetist

For Berkeley-reared tenor saxophonist Raffi Garabedian music is both a calling and a vehicle for exploring his family’s star-crossed past. A highly regarded improviser who’s performed and recorded with artists such as Brad Mehldau Trio drummer Jorge Rossy, bassist Ben Street, saxophonist Dayna Stephens, and R&B legend Johnny Talbot, Garabedian co-founded the innovative brass band Brass Magic.

Berkeley clarinetist Ben Goldberg has spent the past four decades expanding jazz’s frontiers as an improviser, composer and pioneer of the radical Jewish music movement. A relentlessly creative composer, he’s written chamber orchestra song cycles, gutbucket blues, and minimalist soundscapes.

Dividing his time between the Bay Area and New York City in recent years, Goldberg has forged deep ties to a vast and varied constellation of improvisers, including guitarist Mary Halvorson, pianist Myra Melford, and drummers Allison Miller, Gerald Cleaver, Kenny Wollesen, and Ches Smith.

Ben Goldberg’s thoughtful, compelling music has tributaries from klezmer, bebop, and contemporary concert music. His unique approach to the clarinet and other woodwinds has been inspired and informed by artists as diverse as Joe Lovano and Steve Lacy. As a composer, Goldberg is a seeker and sorcerer all in one, delighting audiences with the unexpected. Joined by some of his closest musical friends, this performance will draw from his highly-acclaimed Porch Concert Material program.
