Our three newly crowned award winners are already among the superstars of the young classical music scene, having earned our coveted awards last summer as part of the "Young Elite" program. Named after the title character in Richard Strauss's opera "Arabella," Steinbacher grew up in a family of musicians and began playing the violin at the age of three. It's hardly surprising, then, that her personal connection to Strauss's music was practically instilled in her from birth. Ultimately, however, Arabella Steinbacher devotes herself to the entire violin repertoire and has been one of the great stars of the string firmament for many years. She performs not only as a soloist but also as a chamber music partner—for example, in a duo with the versatile pianist and arranger Peter von Wienhardt. With dance-like verve and sophisticated arrangements of well-known opera and ballet music, including, of course, music by Strauss, the two musicians present a spirited chamber concert.

A warm southerly breeze blows through the palace courtyard: At its second Ludwigsburg open-air concert, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, together with Colombian-American conductor Lina González-Granados and Spanish violinist Leticia Moreno, creates an atmospheric "Spanish Night." The orchestra begins by transporting the audience to Seville, the setting of "Carmen." George Bizet's interpretation of a "Spanish" musical language resulted in many catchy melodies that quickly became audience favorites. Less popular, however, is Maurice Ravel's highly virtuosic concert rhapsody "Tzigane" – a piece of cake for the finger-tapping acrobat Leticia Moreno, who also shines expressively in Camille Saint-Saëns' virtuoso piece. With excerpts from the ballets "El amor brujo" (Love Spell) and "The Three-Cornered Hat" by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra leads the visitors of the "Spanish Night" in the palace courtyard on an exhilarating journey to the musical fireworks of the Blooming Baroque.

The symphonic suite Scheherazade, inspired by fairy tales from One Thousand and One Nights , is one of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's most effective and successful works. Written in 1888, the composer uses dazzling instrumental colors to take up Persian stories and his music depicts a fantastic oriental fairy tale world. In the first half of the concert, the Spanish conductor Pablo Mielgo will perform works from his homeland. In addition to Joaquín Turina's string piece La oración del torero, Manuel de Falla's Nights in Spanish Gardens for piano and orchestra will be heard. De Falla was inspired by the painter Santiago Rusiñol, who colorfully captured impressions of the incomparable beauty of Spanish gardens in his paintings. The real reason why this work was written is none other than to evoke places, moods and feelings , said the composer in 1916. The solo part of the Symphonic Impressions will be performed by the young Spanish pianist and winner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition Martín García García.

Curiously, it’s often been French composers who’ve expressed Spain’s essence, as in Chabrier’s España, inspired by folk musicians he heard there on holiday. Bizet showed similar flair in his opera, Carmen, the colourful Suite No.1 concluding with the famous Toreadors’ March. But to capture the country’s soul, turn to a Spaniard: Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, performed by an always welcome Hallé guest, guitarist Craig Ogden.
