Since 2019, Making Tracks has brought world class music from all corners of the globe to a network of leading venues throughout the UK. The project provides adventurous audiences with opportunities for musical discovery, and is based around the idea that intercultural and interspecies approaches to making music have the power to foster a deeper appreciation of both biodiversity and cultural diversity.

Collaboration has the power to foster a deeper appreciation of both biodiversity and cultural diversity, and this autumn, Making Tracks visits Cardiff for the first time with a fresh line-up of eight musicians performing a captivating programme of solo and ensemble music.

Join us for an unforgettable evening at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Saturday, 11 May 2024, at 7:30 pm, as we present "Soumik Datta: Borderlands Philharmonia." This unique concert features the award-winning sarod player and composer Soumik Datta, the Philharmonia’s Artist in Residence for the 2023/24 season. Celebrate the culmination of his year-long collaboration with the Philharmonia players, exploring the theme of migration through his original score titled "Borderlands."

The evening promises a mesmerizing blend of time zones, migrant memories, and displaced rhythms in an original score for sarod and chamber orchestra. Experience a performance where the stage transforms into an airport concourse, with players engaging in a dynamic exchange of rapid-fire spoken rhythms, chromatic flute lines, and thundering timpani strikes. Cinematic strings soar above sarod and tabla solos, punctuated by electronic samples, political commentary, and personal narratives.

This multifaceted and evocative performance weaves through a series of syncopated, polyphonic movements, offering a compelling perspective on migration. It invites audiences to reflect on the human experience of displacement, tolerance, and home. The production, suitable for all ages, lasts 75 minutes and is co-produced by the Philharmonia and Soumik Datta Arts, with support from Arts Council England, Hawkwood Centre for Future Thinking, Southbank Centre Studio, and Cockayne Grants for the Arts.
