A savvy bandleader, celebrated film composer, brilliant jazz writer, and influential educator, the GRAMMY-winning New Orleans native is a major creative force in the contemporary jazz scene. He has composed over 40 movie scores, including soundtracks for most of director Spike Lee’s work, making Blanchard the most prolific jazz artist working in film. He conceived the E-Collective to explore the intersection of jazz, R&B, funk, and fusion, and describes the project as an outlet to satisfy a yearning he’s had for years to explore areas of music that he’s always loved but rarely ventured into.

In collaboration with the Portland Opera Orchestra, we'll hear from guest stars for an unforgettable night of musical fusion and ensemble work. 

Portland Opera's Co-Artistic Advisor Karen Slack makes her Portland Opera debut, with guest artist and Portland-favorite Will Liverman. Plus, Maestro Damien Geter (Co-Artistic Advisor and Interim Music Director) makes his Portland Opera conducting debut.

Touring regularly with trumpeter Terrance Blanchard’s band, Charles Altura is a singular new voice of jazz guitar. Adventurous yet melodic, Altura’s own music has elements of many of the great artists with whom he’s toured and recorded, such as the late Chick Corea, Tom Harrell, and fellow SJW alumni Ambrose Akinmusire and Dayna Stephens.

Peter Bernstein gave the classic organ trio format new life as a member of the Larry Goldings Trio in the early ’90s, and his mastery of the idiom and the guitar give him a style all his own. A virtuoso’s virtuoso, Bernstein’s music never fails to excite and delight the audience.

2026 marks the centennial of two visionary architects of modern jazz: Miles Davis and John Coltrane. To celebrate their enduring legacy, two of today’s most innovative and influential bandleaders – Terence Blanchard and Ravi Coltrane – join forces for an exceptional concert.

Blanchard and Coltrane, both deeply connected to the spirit and lineage of these jazz icons, embody the very essence of creativity, futurism, transcendence, freedom – and the timeless ‘birth of cool’ that defined Miles and Trane’s artistry.
