Judith Ingolfsson makes her TC debut with the heartachingly beautiful, fiendishly difficult Barber Violin Concerto. The story goes that the “initial” intended performer wanted something more “flashy” for the last movement. Barber delivered and it was so difficult that the violinist never played it! Ms. Ingolfsson has performed it many times to great acclaim. Maestro Rhodes first led the orchestra in October 2000 with Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony during his interview concert. It’s his favorite of the Tchaikovsky Symphonies, with its unparalleled drama and beauty.

- **Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben:** This tone poem, also known as "A Hero’s Life," was composed in 1898 and is designed to illustrate the ideal of great and manly heroism. The piece includes an effusive violin solo depicting Strauss's wife Pauline and features caricatures of his adversaries in the music press. The six-section work contains over 30 quotations from Strauss's earlier compositions, including "Also sprach Zarathustra," "Till Eulenspiegel," "Don Quixote," and "Death and Transfiguration."

- **Samuel Barber’s Overture to The School for Scandal:** Composed in 1931, this was Barber’s first work for full orchestra. Written during a holiday in Italy, it reflects the spirit of Sheridan’s 18th-century comedy of manners with its energetic and fast-paced orchestral brilliance.

- **Vítězslava Kaprálová’s Suita Rustica:** Written in 1938, this three-movement work is both lyrical and exuberant, bearing the influence of Stravinsky’s "Petrushka." Kaprálová, a student of Bohuslav Martinů, composed this piece two years before her untimely death at the age of 25.

According to Grammy-winning American composer Jessie Montgomery, “Strum draws on American folk idioms and the spirit of dance and movement. The piece has a kind of narrative that begins with fleeting nostalgia and transforms into ecstatic celebration.” Samuel Barber, born in West Chester PA in 1910, wrote one of the great American violin concertos. Finishing the concert is Beethoven’s 8th symphony, a piece full of humor, élan, and a light-hearted sparkle. Tickets include a pre-concert talk with Music Director, Michael Hall, the full show, as well as a post-concert Q&A with the conductor, soloist, and select musicians.

Under the baton of Maestro Héctor Guzmán, the evening will feature a world premiere by the acclaimed Robert Xavier Rodríguez, hailed as one of the major American composers of his generation by Texas Monthly. This special concert is set to take place on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 8 PM at the Robinson Fine Arts Center.

The night will be further illuminated by the presence of the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, showcasing their artistry in a beautiful pas de deux from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, alongside a sensuous performance of Ravel's Boléro with choreography by Susan Jaffe. Adding to the musical brilliance, PSO Concertmaster Elisabeth Adkins will captivate the audience with her rendition of the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by Samuel Barber.

Rodríguez's new commission for the PSO, "Tlaloc," celebrates the ancient Aztec god of rain, thunder, and fertility. It features an array of percussion instruments and dramatic echoes of pre-Hispanic Mexico, promising a performance that is both romantically dramatic and richly lyrical. Music Director Carlos Izcaray opens the 2024/25 season with Shostakovich’s Festive Overture. Described by Shostakovich as “festive or celebrative in spirit,” It begins with a brass fanfare which later reappears. Amaryn Olmeda joins Maestro Izcaray and ASO for a performance of Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto. The evening concludes with Saint – Saëns Organ Symphony No. 3, colloquially known as the ‘Organ Symphony.” The composer inscribed it as: Symphonie No. 3 “avec orgue” (with organ.) Patrick Scott is one of the most celebrated and award-winning American organists of his generation: his ASO debut is not one to be missed!

The program includes his first dance for the Company, In Creases, from 2012, an ensemble piece set to music by Philip Glass. As its title indicates, Solo was choreographed for a single dancer, and made its debut as a short film directed by Sofia Coppola during the pandemic.

Forbidden love is in the air as Andrés Orozco-Estrada takes listeners from the streets of Bernstein’s New York to Tchaikovsky’s fantasy on Shakespearean Verona. The Argentine Pampas region is the setting of Ginastera’s vibrant ballet about a city boy who wins the heart of a rancher’s daughter. Barber’s lush and virtuosic Violin Concerto features superstar Hilary Hahn.

As part of Tippet Rise’s Wander series, this concert will take place among works of art located on the art center’s Cottonwood Campus, including Iron Tree by Ai Weiwei and Daydreams and Cursive Takes a Holiday by Patrick Dougherty. **Performers:**
- **Sophia Hunt, Soprano:** A Brazilian-American soprano praised for her trenchant and vocally skilled performances. She is a current member of the Dutch National Opera Studio and has won numerous prestigious vocal competitions.
- **Sara Han, Clarinet:** An active clarinetist from Seoul, South Korea, currently a DaCamera Young Artist based in Houston, TX. She has performed with various orchestras and has won several competitions.
- **Ying Li, Piano:** A Chinese pianist and First Prize winner of the 2021 Young Concert Artists Susan Wadsworth International Auditions. She has performed with leading orchestras and at prestigious venues worldwide.
- **Roberto Díaz, Viola:** President and CEO of the Curtis Institute of Music, a violist of international reputation, and former principal viola of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
