But above all, love is one thing: mysterious, unfathomable, and unpredictable. This is how Sergei Rachmaninoff, at 20, the prime age for great emotions, describes it in a magnificent tone poem which – another enigma – is extremely rarely performed despite its great beauty.

Under the baton of Seattle Symphony Associate Conductor Sunny Xia, brilliant Dutch musician Simone Lamsma makes her Benaroya Hall debut performing one of the all-time violin classics, Tchaikovsky’s glorious Violin Concerto. Tchaikovsky was inspired to write this thrilling Romantic composition during a stay on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland. He worked with his former student and object of infatuation Iosif Kotek, to whom he wished to dedicate the piece, though he changed his mind for fear of gossip. Xia also conducts Dvořák’s folk melody-filled Eighth Symphony, which evokes the pastoral beauty of the composer’s native Bohemia with tempestuous passion and grace.

From the Scottish Isles in Macmillan’s punchy saxophone concerto to the idyllic English countryside of Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Greensleeves, the evening showcases the rich variety of folk-influenced classical music. As well as spanning the globe, tonight’s music also traverses time, transporting you from the Renaissance with Dowland’s Flow My Tears to now, with Jessie Montgomery’s spiky Strum.

Piano Concerto No. 2 established Sergei Rachmaninoff as a renowned concerto composer. Written as a tribute to the neurologist he credited for curing his depression and writer’s block, the concerto is profoundly uplifting and highlights the healing power of music. Serhiy Salov is an award-winning Canadian pianist born in Ukraine, and he joins Symphony Nova Scotia for one of the most popular and often-performed of Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos. Known for his remarkable technique, exacting rigour, and virtuosity – qualities that unwaveringly serve the poetry inherent in the music – he’s received public enthusiasm, critical acclaim, and prominent status on the international music scene as both a soloist and chamber musician. We also perform Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony – a mighty, emotional powerhouse blending soaring melodies, dark turmoil, and deep joy in its explorations of life, loss, and fate.

The program schedule includes masterpieces such as Johann Strauss, Jr.'s "Fledermaus: Overture," César Franck's "Symphonic Variations," Edward Elgar's "Nimrod from Enigma Variations," and Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Finale: Allegro con fuoco from Symphony No.4," among others. The concert will have a runtime of approximately 2 hours.

Before the concert, attendees are invited to a free, interactive lecture at 6:30 PM, offering insights into the evening's program and the opportunity to engage with the music on a deeper level.

Following the concert, the celebration continues with an afterparty sponsored by Rehmann. Scheduled from February 14-16, 2025, at 7:30 PM, this romantic evening will unfold at the prestigious Weatherwax Hall, offering attendees a journey through time with a blend of classical grace and modern twists.

Under the baton of Music Director Matthew Aubin, the concert will feature the acclaimed cellist Julian Schwarz, whose powerful tone and virtuosic skill promise to captivate the audience. The program includes Thomas Adès’s "Three Studies from Couperin," showcasing a contemporary take on historical elegance, and Tchaikovsky’s "Variations on a Rococo Theme" and "Andante cantabile," pieces that epitomize classical beauty. Symphony Nova Scotia’s The Nutcracker is Halifax’s favourite holiday tradition. When a young girl’s toy comes to life, she’s whisked away to an enchanted world where she meets magical creatures, colourful new friends, and the ferocious Mouse Queen. Complete with larger-than-life puppets, spirited dancing, and Tchaikovsky’s iconic, hauntingly beautiful music, this tale of magic and wonder is “a much-loved interpretation” (CBC) and a delightful holiday adventure for all ages.

Despite some disappointing early performances, Tchaikovsky grew to value his First Concerto above all his other piano compositions. The work that finally made Elgar famous was a happy accident. While improvising at the piano he came up with the tune he would later call “Enigma.” Inspired, he generated a slew of variations depicting his friends, all attempts to write in their voices.

It’s one of the most beloved works of the Romantic era and Rimsky-Korsakov’s grandest symphonic masterpiece. And now, Symphony Nova Scotia performs the imaginative, colourful Scheherazade for the first time in almost a decade. Music Director Holly Mathieson conducts this awe-inspiring tour de force that the composer himself called “a kaleidoscope of fairy-tale images” to kick off our Spotlight Series. Plus, multi-award-winning, rising star Canadian pianist Tony Yike Yang – youngest-ever laureate in the history of the International Chopin Piano Competition and hailed as “one of Canada’s finest young musicians” (CBC) – joins us to perform Tchaikovksy’s captivating Piano Concerto No. 1, a piece that has been admired for over 150 years for its virtuosic piano writing, lush melodies, and beautiful orchestration.
