It is one of the best-known works of classical music – and will be presented here together with the equally popular Clair de Lune. Our Family Concert is always a favorite – this time we’re performing Peter and the Wolf, narrated by the always-charismatic Omari Tau.  It’s a great way to introduce kids (and grown-ups!) to the instruments of the orchestra.  We’ll also hear from this year’s Young Artists Grand Prize winner, Sumanth Ganga, performing Creston’s Sonata for Alto Saxophone and we’ll perform Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances No. 8, Op. 46.

Dvořák is the favorite composer of many classical music fans and orchestras alike. His music plays well – and is pleasant to listen to. It is often lighthearted, comfortable, and full of life. The Czech national classic is represented twice in our concert – with two concert overtures, one of which poetically captures rural moods and views, the other sparklingly immerses itself in a turbulent carnival festivities. Brahms' profound A minor concerto, the so-called "Double Concerto," features two soloists – a work tailor-made for our brotherly soloist duo of Claudio and Oscar Bohórquez. The two also plays a role in Schubert's Symphony in B minor. It consists of two movements, not four like a conventional symphony, which is why it is nicknamed the Unfinished . Nevertheless, it is a complete masterpiece. It moves forward with double the force.

Adam Kerry Boyles leads a program rich in emotion and orchestral brilliance. Dvorák’s Cello Concerto in B minor, one of the most celebrated works for the instrument, performed by cellist Tommy Mesa. This sweeping, romantic masterpiece blends soaring melodies with moments of deep introspection, showcasing the cello’s expressive power.

Under the baton of Seattle Symphony Associate Conductor Sunny Xia, brilliant Dutch musician Simone Lamsma makes her Benaroya Hall debut performing one of the all-time violin classics, Tchaikovsky’s glorious Violin Concerto. Tchaikovsky was inspired to write this thrilling Romantic composition during a stay on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland. He worked with his former student and object of infatuation Iosif Kotek, to whom he wished to dedicate the piece, though he changed his mind for fear of gossip. Xia also conducts Dvořák’s folk melody-filled Eighth Symphony, which evokes the pastoral beauty of the composer’s native Bohemia with tempestuous passion and grace.

Serbian violinist Jelena Horvat has performed as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician in venues including the Menuhin Hall and Kings Place and Liszt Academy Grand Hall in Hungary. Jelena’s 2025 Spring/Summer season included solo debuts at St Martin-in-the-Fields and the 1901 Arts Club as part of the Hattori Foundation Recital Series.

Highlights of recent performances include recitals with pianist Orli Shaham at the Kauffman Music Center’s Musical Storefront series (NYC), Music for Food (NYC), and at Colorado’s Telluride Music Festival and Music off the Hook Arts Music Festival. Buck was awarded a 2019 Music Faculty Incentive Grant by the SUNY Purchase Conservatory that facilitated two commissions: John Harbison’s DeBut for solo violin, and Fantasia on Beethoven’s Spring Sonata for violin and piano by Bruce Adolphe. In October 2021, she joined Grammy Award-winning producer, Silas Brown, to record Harbison’s Suite for Solo Violin for a forthcoming album.

Recent seasons have offered great experiences with great cellists, and this season is no exception. There is a rehearsal with Maximilian Hornung, who in 2018 enchanted the audience when he was a soloist in Bruch's Kol Nidrei. Now he is the soloist in the cello concerto that Elgar composed in the aftermath of the First World War. At that time, his music was already slowly falling out of fashion among concert audiences. Unlike Elgar's earlier violin concerto, which is lyrical and passionate, the cello concerto is mostly pensive and elegiac. Many years later, the concerto was reborn when the 20-year-old cellist Jacqueline du Pré practically made it her signature piece in 1965.

2. **Cello Concerto in B Minor, Op. 104**

3. **Slavonic Dances, Op. 46**  
   The program concludes with these rousing and colorfully orchestrated dances, a testament to Dvorák’s mastery in capturing the spirit of Czech folk music.

Music transcends today's actual boundaries, echoes the natural, musical boundaries of yesteryear, and above all shows how much music is the connecting factor between different cultural regions. Casco Phil takes you on a journey that began hundreds of years ago and introduces you to folk music from Hungary, stirring Klezmer from Romania, festive French music at the Court of Louis XIV, and much more. You will hear beautiful music from all corners of Europe as we take you on a complete 'tour musicale', from Western Europe to Central Europe and Northern Europe, and then via Eastern Europe to Southern Europe. The program takes a journey through Europe, taking as its starting point the current members of the European Union. At the same time we also take a journey in time. Music from the 16th century is discussed (by the Mechelen Philippus De Monte), but also baroque music, music from classicism and romanticism, a significant portion of folk music arranged for orchestra, and of course also a touch of accessible modern music. In this way, cultural regions are musically highlighted through the different epochs that have molded Europe into what it is today.

Rhine. This year, the Czech Philharmonic appear at the Rheingau Musik Festival with young Russian cellist Anastasia Kobekina who is the soloist in Dvořák’s Cello Concerto. The Czech Philharmonic’s first ever conductor Antonín Dvořák will also be represented through his three concert overtures – In Nature’s Realm, Carnival, and Othello – conducted by Jakub Hrůša.

Switzerland’s Lucerne Festival is one of the oldest and most prestigious festivals in Europe. This year, the Czech Philharmonic perform there for the twelfth time. Augustin Hadelich, one of the greatest violinists of all time, returns to perform Tchaikovsky’s unparalleled Violin Concerto. The deeply patriotic Dvořák wished to use his music to recognize the struggle and oppression of his fellow Czechs; he wrote of this urgent Seventh Symphony, “What is in my mind is Love, God, and my Fatherland." Kevin Puts’ Two Mountain Scenes, composed “with the impressive backdrop of the Rocky Mountains in mind” and beginning with “the sonic illusion of a single trumpet reverberating across the valley,” opens this wondrous program.

This program features two timeless works of classical chamber music - Antonin Dvorak's String Quintet No. 3 in E-Flat Major, Op. 97 and Franz Schubert's Piano Trio No. 1 in B-Flat Major, Op. 99.  

Dvorak's String Quintet No. 3 is a masterful composition that is filled with lyrical melodies, rich harmonic texture, and rhythmic vitality. The quintet is composed for two violins, two violas, and cello, and it presents a delightful interplay between instruments.

He’s joined by a pianist long admired by Hallé audiences, Nelson Goerner, whom BBC Music Magazine dubbed ‘An artist of a very high order’. He plays the concerto with which Rachmaninov, as composer and virtuoso pianist, swept the world. American composer Missy Mazzoli wrote her animated Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres) in ‘the shape of a solar system’, elaborating that ‘it’s a piece that churns and rolls, that inches close to the listener, only to leap away at breakneck speed’. To conclude, Dvořák’s genial, sunny Eighth Symphony, bursting with the beguiling folk tunes of Bohemia.

Far from home, Dvořák poured all his heartbreak and longing into a cello concerto like no other: a symphony in all but name, as sweet and as stormy as life itself. Meanwhile in France, the Belgian master César Franck created a symphony that’s practically a Gothic cathedral in sound – a world of swirling mists and monumental visions, crowned with a melody that you’ll never forget. Guest conductor Marie Jacquot scales its heights tonight, and joins the ‘sublime’ (Gramophone) Kian Soltani in Dvořák’s magnificent Concerto.
