The gorgeous program explores the history of this sacred tradition through three different styles: the conventional chant, the interpretation by the 12th-century abbess Hildegard of Bingen, and Arvo Pärt’s reimagining of it.

‘The standard is absolutely higher than brass playing has ever been before’, said trumpet virtuoso Alison Balsam, speaking of an ensemble that celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Among the highlights in the programme is a new piece by Roxanna Panufnik, who in May 2023 won a notable success with her contribution to the music at the Coronation of King Charles III.

Celebrate the turning of the year with an a cappella choral ensemble that both nationally and internationally has held a unique position among such groups ever since its foundation in 1968.


The remarkable Stile Antico marks its twentieth season by honoring the 500th anniversary of one of the greatest masters of Renaissance polyphony, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, whose career was inextricably intertwined with the Papacy and the great churches of Rome for which he composed. The program includes some of the composer’s most beloved and timeless motets, gems by other leading composers active in Rome at that time, and a new work by British composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad, written especially for this occasion.

The ORA singers present a concert themed around ‘the passing of the Year’, centred around Jonathan Dove’s song-cycle of the same name for double choir and piano, alongside Renaissance songs celebrating sacred feast days, poetry for each season and new work from Manchester-based composer Emily Pedersen, and BBC Philharmonic composer-in-residence Tom Coult.
