Choreographer Bill T. Jones’s era-defining dance Still/Here is perhaps the most written-about piece of performance movement created in the last thirty years. Originating at BAM's Next Wave Festival in 1994, where it staged an anniversary revival in 2024, Still/Here 's boundary-breaking, personal-as-political ethos remains resonant and pertinent in the modern environment. First staged before the apex of the AIDS epidemic, Still/Here asks what we owe the dying and what they have to teach us. Jones, himself H.I.V. positive, ideated the project only a few years after his creative and life partner, Arnie Zane, had died of AIDS. At the heart of Still/Here are the “Survival Workshops: Talking and Moving about Life and Death,” conducted across the country with people living with life-threatening illness. The highly formal structures of Still/Here are delivered with simplicity and sophistication, marked by spoken text, video portraits, dance and the abstract nature of gesture.

Actor and slam-poet-turned-musician Saul Williams pairs tracks from his albums MartyrLoserKing and Encrypted & Vulnerable with choreography to explore the intersection of technology and race, exploitation, and mystical anarchy, where hackers are artists and activists. Directed by MacArthur Fellow Bill T. Jones, dancers move through a progression of otherworldly scenes, flooded with strobe and neon lights, while wearing elaborate headdresses—“one like a giant brain or large Afro, another like a Cubist head made from shards of vinyl records” (The New York Times).

These include the likes of Ronald K. Brown, nora chipaumire, and Bill T. Jones, among others.

The evening will be curated by celebrated director and choreographer Camille A. Brown, who first presented in E-Moves in 2004. Brown has assembled an inspiring lineup of associate choreographers from her theater and commercial work, all of whom are forging their own paths in dance. The program will feature works by Chloe Davis, Juel D. Lane, Mayte Natalio, Rickey Tripp, and Maleek Washington, centered around the theme of BLACK JOY.

In addition to these performances, Camille A. Brown will present "TURF," featuring her acclaimed company, Camille A. Brown & Dancers, in a tour de force that has garnered attention from The New York Times and dance enthusiasts worldwide.
