Curated by SFJAZZ this thrilling line-up of internationally recognized jazz artists launches its inaugural residence at Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts during the 2025-26 Season.

Tyreek McDole, a 25-year-old Haitian-American vocalist from sunny Florida, shines brilliantly as his star rises in the bustling New York scene. With a string of prestigious awards to his name, Tyreek stands out as a rising star in the music world.

In November 2023, Tyreek won first place in the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Noted as one of the most anticipated events in jazz, McDole’s accolade now ranks him among the competition’s previous winners including the standout artists Samara Joy (2019 winner) and Jazzmeia Horn (2013 winner). Tyreek is the second male to ever win in the competition’s 12-year history.

Master Kenny Barron started his career as a teenager with Philly Joe Jones and moved to New York at 19, playing with Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, and Yusef Lateef. A prolific bandleader, Barron has recorded over 40 albums and has earned 14 Grammy® nominations. A dedicated educator, he taught at Rutgers University for nearly 30 years, mentoring artists like Terence Blanchard and David Sánchez. In 2009 he received the Living Legacy Award from Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation and was inducted into the American Jazz Hall of Fame and won a MAC Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. He is an eight-time recipient of Best Pianist by the Jazz Journalists Association.

The Flynn Center is excited to present a captivating five-night residency featuring the talented Tyreek McDole, a 24-year-old Haitian-American vocalist making waves in the New York jazz scene. With a series of prestigious awards under his belt, Tyreek McDole has shared the stage with renowned musicians such as Theo Croker, NEA Jazz Master Gary Bartz, Miki Yamanaka, Mike King, Mike Ode, and Eric Wheeler. His performances have graced the stages of iconic venues like the Blue Note, Dizzy's Club, Birdland Theatre, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Minton's Playhouse, showcasing his exceptional talent and earning him the title of winner of the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.

This special event is part of the 2024 Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, held at the Vermont Comedy Club, which transforms into Big Joe’s every night of the festival. Named in honor of Big Joe Burrell, a cornerstone jazz musician of Burlington, Big Joe’s becomes an after-hours, old school jazz joint. Starting at 10 pm each night from Wednesday, June 5, 2024, to Sunday, June 9, 2024, Tyreek McDole and his impressive band will take the stage, followed by open jam sessions at midnight, inviting any musicians to join in the vibrant musical exchange.

Many know Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein for the enduring brilliance of Oklahoma!, Carousel, The King and I, and The Sound of Music– all of which receive inventive reimagining from each new generation of Broadway creators. But few understand the depth of their commitment to addressing social issues through music, lyrics, and character development. Winner of the 2023 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, Florida-reared vocalist Tyreek McDole returns to the Joe Henderson Lab with his quintet following his masterful San Francisco Jazz Festival performance. With his rich baritone and a mastery of the Great American Songbook, McDole has earned his reputation as “a standout in the next generation of great jazz singers” (WBGO).
