The award-winning Ligeti Quartet explore music shaped by rhythm, memory and technology. The programme opens with selections from John Adams' John's Book of Alleged Dances and Ana Sokolovic's Commedia dell'arte, before a world premiere by Ben Nobuto, co-commissioned by the Barbican. After the interval comes Reich's Different Trains.

Steve Reich: Different Trains with Bryce Dessner

The Glasshouse International Centre for Music

Steve Reich’s music is made of movement. Patterns shift, collide, and reform. The smallest rhythm grows into something vast. A single chord can shimmer like glass.

In Three Movements, the music constantly moves and turns. Repeating figures stretch and ripple until you lose track of where the downbeat lands. Variations for Winds, Strings and Keyboards is a kaleidoscope of colour. Chords slide past one another, glowing one moment, dissolving the next.

Electric Counterpoint, written for both pre-recorded and live guitars, turns repetition into a trance. With Bryce Dessner at its heart, expect a sound both mechanical and deeply human. Then The Four Sections pulls the whole orchestra into Reich’s pulsing universe – strings, winds, brass and percussion stacked into layers that vibrate with raw power.

Make American History Great Again? Endangered Dreams is the title that the African American composer Jalalu-Kalvert Nelson, who lives in Biel, has given his new ensemble piece. He says he is responding to “the present situation in America, where there is a battle of American identity and history taking place right now. There are factions in America who want to re-write American history and to delete the unpleasant parts of that history — and to sanitize the American Dream of its blemishes. Which means essentially to turn this dream into a one-sided lie.” Just how multifaceted America sounds becomes clear in the rest of the program: Steve Reich, one of the pioneers of Minimalism, fuses two marimbas and two vibraphones into an ecstatically pulsing rhythm machine in his Mallet Quartet. Elliott Carter’s music, by contrast, is deeply rooted in both American and European modernism.

Sometimes all it takes is simply clapping your hands to create complex yet deeply grooving rhythms. In keeping with the Festival theme “American Dreams,” a percussion quartet from the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) presents four works by Steve Reich, including his iconic Clapping Music and Drumming. One of the masterminds of American Minimalism, Reich sets simple motifs and rhythms in continuous loops, gradually shifting them against one another to create intricate polyrhythmic patterns with a mesmerizing flow.

Go West! To open the summer Festival, Riccardo Chailly and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra explore a range of “American Dreams.” First up is George Gershwin, who fused classical music and jazz so brilliantly that the old divide between highbrow and popular music simply falls away. His snappy Cuban Overture, inspired by a visit to Havana, practically dances on rumba rhythms. In contrast, his grand Concerto in F — which Chailly considers “the first American piano concerto” — takes its cues from the Charleston and the blues. Gershwin called its finale “a rhythmic orgy”: the perfect showcase for a boundary-pushing artist like the 34-year-old Frank Dupree, with his overflowing energy and infectious joy in performance.

A child of separation, the American Steve Reich, a pioneer of minimalist music, regularly traveled back and forth by train between New York and Los Angeles. During these long journeys, one thought constantly preoccupied him: had he been born a little earlier in Europe, with his Jewish heritage, he would undoubtedly have traveled on different trains. This is what gave rise in 1988 to Different Trains , a string quartet with a soundtrack.

In their inaugural collaboration, Loop38 and Aperio present Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians, celebrating the 50th anniversary of its groundbreaking 1976 premiere. Hailed as a defining work of American minimalism, Music for 18 Musicians helped bring minimalist music into the cultural spotlight. Its 1978 recording was a commercial and cultural breakthrough, propelling minimalism beyond the New York scene and to listeners around the world.

Fifty years later, the work remains vital and visionary. This performance offers a rare opportunity to experience Music for 18 Musicians live in Houston. Join us in honoring a masterpiece that continues to shape the sound of contemporary music today.

With the concert, we explore musical boundaries, or rather: the brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen do, together with the two percussionists Alexej Gerassimez and Emil Kuyumcuyan. They present a diverse program that focuses on rhythms and sounds. John Adams' rapid "Short Ride in a Fast Machine" is virtually a musical adrenaline rush, which in this arrangement for piano and percussion unleashes all its pulsating energy in a concentrated form. Fazil Say's Variations for two pianos and percussion combine Turkish folk music with energetic modern sounds. Steve Reich's Quartet for two pianos and two vibraphones is hypnotic and precise - minimalist music that unfolds a unique pull through its shimmering patterns. The Symphonic Dances from "West Side Story," on the other hand, bring Broadway to the concert stage: passionate, dramatic, and full of dance rhythms. Lutosławski dedicated his moving Musique funèbre to the pioneering composer Bela Bartók whilst Steve Reich’s lyrical Pulse is a tenderly contemplative, yet constantly pulsating, work. Jonny Greenwood’s groundbreaking Horror Vacui, performed by Daniel Pioro, ‘the violinist making classical music cool’ (The Telegraph), plays upon the artistic concept of ‘the fear of empty spaces’ to astonishing effect. Using the full sonic potential of the solo violin and extensive string orchestra, he creates an eerily liminal soundscape, building in atmosphere and intensity throughout each movement. Steve Reich's monumental work for choir and orchestra is more than just a piece of minimal music—it's an acoustic metaphor for what science calls "swarm behavior." Countless rhythmic and melodic phrases are interwoven to form a collective structure that is more than the sum of its parts. Reich employs the repetitive patterns typical of his music, which constantly shift in minute ways, causing the soundscape to move as if in slow motion. Not unlike a flock of birds, each individual acts independently, yet together they form a harmonious and structural whole. The Lithuanian composer Justė Janulytė is known for her minimalist, monochromatic soundscapes, which she pours into slow, ethereal processes with a keen sense of perfect dramaturgy. She plays with the merging of individual voices into a collective mass, making the transition almost invisible. Commissioned by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Justė Janulytė has been inspired to create a new work for large orchestra, which will have its world premiere at Forum N.
