Sir Andrew Davis (1944–2024), the celebrated British conductor famed for delighting audiences at the BBC Proms with his sparkling wit and exquisite musicianship, is remembered in this Prom from the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Martyn Brabbins.

The centrepiece of the concert is Reich’s Jacob’s Ladder, the composer’s ‘dream of ascending and descending a ladder between heaven and earth’ that was deemed ‘energetic, meditative, light, graceful and refreshing’ when premiered in New York last spring.

The programme includes the exciting dancing textures created by pioneering multi-layered tape pieces such as Steve Reich’s Violin Phase and Vermont Counterpoint. Richly complex patterns create compelling listening in Julius Eastman’s Joy Boy and modern New York icon Julia Wolfe’s East Broadway. We’ll look to the British version of the movement with Michael Nyman’s captivating In C Interlude while the weaving melodies hypnotise in Anna Clyne’s Just as they are. The concert will close with a performance of Gavin Bryars’ extraordinary Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet, in celebration of the composer’s strong links to Portsmouth in his highly experimental ensemble the Portsmouth Sinfonia.

The evening's programme promises a profound musical journey, featuring Joseph Haydn's "Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze (The Seven Last Words)" and Steve Reich's "Different Trains for string quartet and tape." These pieces, one reflecting on the meditative grandeur of Haydn's work and the other, a contemporary masterpiece by Reich that intertwines the sounds of trains with historical narratives, promise to deliver an unforgettable auditory experience.

The performances will showcase the talents of Daniela Jung and Marije Grevink on violin, Christiane Hörr-Kalmer on viola, and Jan Mischlich on violoncello. This ensemble of accomplished musicians is set to bring the compositions to life, offering a night of reflective and moving music.

In preparation for Juilliard’s forthcoming collaboration with ARRAY as part of the inaugural California Festival, chamber music and jazz students present an Open Studio. This informal event will feature light refreshments and conversation as well as run-throughs of works curated by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning composer and pianist Kris Bowers (BM '10, MM '12, jazz studies). The event will be hosted by Creative Associate at Large and faculty member Nadia Sirota (BM ’04, MM ’06, viola; Academy ’08).

We are delighted to welcome guitarist JIJI, known for her virtuosity and command of diverse repertoire, to Tippet Rise for the first time. Performing outdoors on the land at the Domo by Ensamble Studio, JIJI’s program Counterpoint Dream, takes us on a musical journey in and out of several centuries including Baroque-period works by the 16th century nun Claudia Sessa, Marin Marais and J.S. Bach, Romantic virtuosos Niccolò Paganini and Isaac Albéniz, Haitian guitarist and composer Frantz Casseus, and American minimalist Steve Reich. The program also includes with works by Antón García-Abril – a special tribute to the great Catalan composer and father of Ensamble Studio’s principal architect of the same name, whose other-worldly structures, including the Domo, are integral to the Tippet Rise experience.

Formed in 2018, Dream House Quartet fuses decades of musical mastery of classical and contemporary forms, featuring luminaries the Katia and Marielle Labèque on dueling pianos along with acclaimed composer-guitarists Bryce Dessner (The National) and David Chalmin (innocence, la terre invisible) performing radical new commissions from visionary composers and pivotal contemporary works of the last half century. In its first-ever world tour, this all-star ensemble will bring singular interpretations of several highly influential works of minimalist pioneers and contemporary composers to Austin for the first time. The original double album Minimalist Dream House (released in 2013) gathered interpretations of compositions by pioneers of minimalism and their successors, including Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt, Thom Yorke, Aphex Twin and Brian Eno – artists who bend musical time and space as much as the Labèques, while enjoying the paradoxical freedom of minimalism’s limitations. The Austin premiere of Dream House Quartet will feature new works by Dessner and Chalmin (commissioned for the group) as well as works by Meredith Monk, Steve Reich and Philip Glass.

Minimalist master Steve Reich returns to his New York arts scene roots in this bright and rhythmically agile piece, written and performed alongside painter Gerhard Richter’s film Moving Picture. The film starts with a two-pixel pulsating, colour-shifting line, which becomes four pixels, then sixteen, then 32 and so on. The music starts with a two-note oscillation that expands equally but then becomes liberated from the structure of the forms on film, allowing notes to escape and create their own destiny in this cool and elegant piece. Music by two other masters of the New York scene complement Reich’s music, while the London Sinfonietta, with Sound Intermedia, re-create Nunu, its commission from the late and sadly missed Mira Calix.

This Noon to Midnight anchoring all-Reich concert culminates with a remarkable collaboration between composer Steve Reich and artist Gerhard Richter. Richter will provide a computer-generated film of his painting 946-3. The result: a stream of images interpreted by music and a musical composition visualized by film images.

Following an interval, the concert will resume with Steve Reich's "Six Pianos" and Bryce Dessner's "Aheym for String Quartet," bringing a modern twist to the classical music experience.

Leon Weber, a distinguished artist in live electronics, will join the performers, adding an electrifying dimension to the evening's repertoire. This concert is a part of the Classic X series, which aims to bridge the gap between traditional symphonic music and contemporary electronic sounds, offering audiences an innovative and immersive musical experience.

WMS’s principal percussionist is back with a program featuring music by Steve Reich, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Igor Stravinsky, among others. Joining Matthew Beck will be CMU faculty member and former WMS timpanist Andrew Spencer; along with pianists Patrick Johnson from MSU and Zhao Wang from CMU.

The Colin Currie Group was founded by its namesake to celebrate and showcase the music of Steve Reich, and in its 15-year history has developed a close collaborative relationship with the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer. Currie is a world-class percussionist, and has assembled a superlative ensemble of percussion, strings, keyboards, and winds, augmented by the fantastic Synergy Vocals, to perform Reich’s challenging music—from his iconic works of the 1970s and 1980s to brand-new commissions. Here in Berkeley, the group celebrates Reich’s 86th birthday, performing his influential Music for 18 Musicians and his classic Tehillim, the first work in which he explored his Jewish heritage. A Cal Performances co-commission, Traveler’s Prayer is a sinuous, pensive setting of three Old Testament texts—a work the Guardian describes as “very different from anything Reich has composed before.”

The MSO’s February concert opens with Steve Reich’s groundbreaking Clapping Music, a minimalist marvel that challenges conventional notions of rhythm and ensemble performance. Featuring precise handclap patterns that gradually shift and evolve, Reich’s composition mesmerizes with its hypnotic simplicity and intricate rhythmic interplay. Speaking of rhythm, we next present Philip Glass’s Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists, starring our own Principal Timpanist Laura Noah alongside guest percussionist Peter Ferry. Glass’s mesmerizing concerto is a rhythmic blast, showcasing the timpani’s versatility and expressive power in a dialogue that spans resonant depths and ethereal heights.

We celebrate the 40th anniversary of the groundbreaking Apollo Saxophone Quartet with two of the many wonderful pieces they have commissioned from UK composers through the years. Clark Rundell returns to join in the celebrations and adds one of his favourite Steve Reich pieces, a jazz-infused work of virtuosity by Ukrainian Nikolai Kapustin, and replays a piece by talented North West composer Carmel Smickersgill.
