This event, titled "HYS x HSO Side-by-Side," marks a special collaboration between the Hawaii Youth Symphony (HYS) and the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra (HSO), showcasing a unique side-by-side program. This initiative brings together professional musicians and aspiring young talents, allowing them to share the stage in what promises to be an unforgettable performance.

For this fall 2023 concert, an impressive ensemble of 150 musicians will grace the stage, making it possibly the largest orchestra ever to perform at the Waikiki Shell. The orchestra will feature 86 musicians from Youth Symphony I and 64 musicians from the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra, creating a multi-generational musical experience that celebrates both the future and the heritage of orchestral music.

Under the baton of conductor Joseph Stepec, the evening's program will include vibrant and dynamic works such as Arturo Márquez's "Conga del Fuego Nuevo," Hector Berlioz's "Hungarian March," and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Capriccio Italien." These pieces promise to captivate the audience with their energy, beauty, and complexity.

In keeping with the spirit of community and accessibility, the Hawaii Youth Symphony and the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra are thrilled to offer this concert free to the public, thanks to the generous support of our sponsors and supporters. Anne Akiko Meyers is one of the world’s most esteemed violinists, celebrated for her expressive depth and technical prowess. She has collaborated with today’s most important composers, conductors, and orchestras, creating a remarkable collection of new violin repertoire for future generations, including Arturo Márquez’s Fandango, a violin concerto written for her in 2021, which received a 2024 Grammy® Award nomination for her recording with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Ms. Meyers’ CAMA recital debut program will include a premiere of Philip Glass’s New Chaconne, as well as Márquez’s Danzón No.2 in a new arrangement by the composer. Anne Akiko Meyers will play the exquisite 1741 “ex-Vieuxtemps” Guarneri del Gesù, considered by many to be the finest sounding violin in existence for its powerfully luxuriant sound and mint state of preservation. Joining Anne Akiko Meyers is Italian pianist Fabio Bidini, a distinguished faculty member at the Colburn School in Los Angeles.

"Trumpet & Tequila" is a part of the ESO Pairings series, presented by Tumbler & Rocks, which offers curated concerts designed to make classical music accessible and enjoyable for all. These short and sweet performances come with no intermission, making them the perfect introduction to the orchestra for newcomers, while still delighting long-time classical music enthusiasts.

The concert will showcase the incredible talent of Pacho Flores, making his ESO debut with two dynamic trumpet concertos—one for trumpet and the other for flugelhorn—that he composed himself. Additionally, the program will feature an emotional work dedicated to Malala Yousafzai, the young activist and winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize, marking its ESO Premiere.

Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the Southwest landscape through the Phoenix Symphony's final classical concerts of the season, featuring the "Grand Canyon Suite." Under the baton of conductor Thomas Wilkins, the orchestra will bring to life Grofe’s cinematic masterpiece, offering five musical scenes that capture the essence of one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The concert will also highlight Aaron Copland’s popular "El Salón México" and the "Fandango Violin Concerto" by contemporary Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, featuring Spanish violinist Francisco Fullana.
