Mendelssohn is still considered an outstanding musical prodigy today. One of his youthful masterpieces is his first string quintet, which he composed at the age of 15. A late work, however, is Bartók's trio "Contrasts". The piece is inspired by melodies from Bartók's homeland of Hungary - sounds that were familiar to him since childhood. Reger's clarinet quintet was his last composition. Homages to his great role models Mozart and Brahms can be heard as well as Reger's mature and masterful harmony.

Bela Bartók is one of those composers who are performed far too rarely in our region - not even such solitary creative highlights as the music for string instruments, percussion and celesta . Folklorism and avant-garde, construction and expressivity, excited motor movement and shocking emotional climaxes - all of this is brought into a unique balance in the work. At the same time, Bartók also reinvented the sound of strings, which is reflected in the unusual title. Le mystère des voix bulgares: this was the name of a legendary record (or rather a series of records) that electrified music fans all over the world: rough, rubbing, flattering, incredibly rhythmic choral sounds that had never been heard before! Or had they? Béla Bartók, the great Hungarian folk music researcher, had already poured them into his string quartet in the 1930s, and Bulgarian ensembles and choirs had never stopped cultivating the country’s musical traditions. East and West, church sounds and fast-paced village bands meet here. The quartet around our violinist with Bulgarian roots, Maria Geißler, embarks on a virtuoso and sensuous search for traces.

After the premiere of his Quintet in E flat major at the Burgtheater in Vienna in 1784, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote to his father Leopold that the new work received "extraordinary acclaim" and added: "I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life." Free from any genre traditions, he achieved a congenial success with the innovative combination of four wind instruments and a piano. Mozart uses the five instruments, whose voices are closely interwoven, in a very nuanced manner. The Piano quintet by Hungarian composer Béla Bartók also premiered in Vienna, albeit 120 years later. Shortly before, he had completed his composition studies with Brahms’ friend Hans Koessler in Budapest. In addition to the clear influence of Johannes Brahms, some of Bartók’s individual traits can also be recognized in this late Romantic work, such as the tonal steps and rhythms derived from Hungarian folk music, which are characteristic of his later style. Between the two quintets, Bartók’s captivating Romanian Folk Dances can be heard in a version for flute and percussion.

This concert is about the music that comes when we long for home. Dvořák’s "New World" Symphony captures the energetic elements of music he heard in America, dosed with a heartfelt nostalgia for his homeland. The result is one of the warmest celebrations of looking forwards and back. It’s no surprise that a recording of this symphony even made its way onto Apollo XI. Raymond Yiu’s Violin Concerto meditates on exile, inspired by the life of composer Ma Sicong, who fled China to build a new life in the U.S. And in his Romanian Folk Dances, Bartók finds inspiration in authentic regional folk music.

In a proven and moving mixture of words, images and sound, musicians from the orchestra remember former employees of the opera who were expelled by the National Socialists from 1933 onwards. Between the movements, Margarita Broich reads from personal documents of Paul Feher (tenor), Theo Front (assistant director), Berthold Goldschmidt (musical advisor) and Hilde Reiss (chorus singer).

Isabel Healy is a first-year master's student at Carnegie Mellon University. She studied both viola performance with Tim Deighton and music technology at Penn State University. She is a multi-faceted performer who is interested in 20th century and contemporary music that features live technological involvement, and has composed works using programs such as SuperCollider, MaxMSP, and Pure Data. During her time at Penn State, she was selected to participate in various masterclasses hosted by James Dunham, Stephen Wyrczynski, Tatjana Mead Chamis, and David Harding. Her quartet was also selected to play in masterclasses hosted by Benjamin Beilman, Ian Saunders, and Tom Rosenberg. Her involvement in the school of music propelled her to achieve the position of treasurer and then president of the Penn State Viola Society and vice president of the Arts and Architecture Student Council. She is passionate about creating an innovative space for music of all types and keeping the arts accessible.

Pianist Christopher Guzman enjoys an international performing career that showcases a broad range of styles from the Baroque era to the avant-garde. Since winning top prizes in international competitions such as the Walter M. Naumburg Competition, the Seoul International Music Competition, and the Isang Yun Competition, Guzman has performed across Europe, North and South America, and Asia. As a result of winning the top prize at the Concours International de Piano d’Orléans in France, he has toured that country extensively, giving performances and teaching master classes. His CD of music of Paul Reale on the Naxos label, Chopin’s Ghosts, was included in Fanfare magazine’s top five releases of 2018. As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with the classical music world’s most exciting soloists, including Ilya Gringolts, Antoine Tamestit, David Fray, and Jeremy Denk.

Béla Bartók wrote his Divertimento in August 1939, while he was already preparing to emigrate to the USA in view of the increasingly threatening political situation. In the otherwise friendly work, the circumstances of the time are reflected in the dark, towering sound clusters of the second movement. Only two years earlier, in November 1937, Robert Schumann's Violin Concerto had its premiere - 84 years after it was written and abused for propaganda purposes: As part of a pompous Nazi event, Schumann's concerto was launched as an "Aryan" replacement for the banned Violin Concerto by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy - a plan that fortunately failed. Freed from its unfortunate reception history, the Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang plays Schumann's Violin Concerto. Schumann's 1st Symphony had an easier time of it, and was well received by the audience at its premiere in Leipzig. It is Schumann's most cheerful symphony and seems to reflect spring and the awakening of nature. The Munich Philharmonic will be led through this contrasting program by the Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla.

The Southwest German Chamber Orchestra Pforzheim proves once again in this concert how incredibly colorful pure string sound can be. And it presents a little surprise. Under the title "Helvetia" it invites you on a multifaceted and exciting tour through... yes, actually... the Swiss music history of the last 120 years. There are some great things to marvel at: First of all there is Peter Mieg, whose works have already been heard several times in Pforzheim programs. He is represented with his most internationally successful work, Toccata, Arioso and Gigue, which shows him to be a great veteran between rhythmic finesse and expansive sound. Othmar Schoeck is probably the most important song composer of the 20th century and so it is not surprising that the solo cello in his concerto op. 61 repeatedly revels in the most wonderful cantilenas: a real treat! Paul Juon, a descendant of Swiss immigrants who lived in Russia for a long time, only returned to his Swiss homeland in old age and thus gave it a late but excellent late romantic composer! Finally: Bartók - of course not Swiss! His stirring Divertimento Sz. 113 was commissioned by the Swiss super-sponsor Paul Sacher and is actually considered one of the most important string works of his time.

Rachmaninov’s world was turned completely upside down by the Great War. Severed from his roots, he fled Russia and began a career as a globetrotting pianist. His devilish set of variations, performed here by Bruce Liu – winner of the 2021 International Chopin Competition – embodies this nomadic life: written in Switzerland, premiered in America, based on a tune by Italian violinist Niccolò Paganini and infused with Rachmaninov’s own Russian style. Composers Erich Korngold and Béla Bartók were also forced by politics to leave their homes: both fled from fascism to the New World, and Korngold’s swashbuckling film score is practically a hymn to freedom. Bartók’s spectacular Concerto for Orchestra, meanwhile, is more than just a multi-coloured showcase, it’s a struggle between darkness and light, crowned by a mighty shout of joy.

The young Spanish conductor Roberto González-Monjas makes his BSO debut with a testament to the universal power of music, culminating in a rare reading of Mendelssohn’s deeply spiritual “Reformation” Symphony. Our March program celebrates the global travels and diverse influences of some of our favorite composers, creating a rich tapestry of sound that will be meaningful for both the orchestra players and our audience. Czech composer Antonín Dvořák spent three years in America (from 1892-1895) as director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York City, which is where he composed his great Cello Concerto. We’ll be joined by guest cellist Nicholas Canellakis, a multifaceted artist who appears regularly with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Hungarian composer Béla Bartók was well known in America as a pianist, teacher, and ethnomusicologist, and his Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta is one of his most popular compositions. We’ll open the concert with a world premiere symphonic work from young Bahamian composer Stefan Thompson, a recent Boston Conservatory graduate, now studying for a PhD in Screen Scoring at New York University.

After his emigration from Revolutionary Russia in 1918, Rachmaninoff, as one of the world’s most sought-after pianists, had little time for composing and completed only six pieces in a quarter of a century of exile. But that music is among his most beautiful and concentrated, and none more so than his elegiac final work, his Symphonic Dances, written when World War II was already underway, and the composer and his wife were living in New York City. Rachmaninoff, already sick with the lung cancer that was to kill him, spent time in a country retreat on Long Island, where the quiet and peacefulness inspired music combining intense nostalgia for an old world gone with the tremendous rhythmic energy and optimism that he so loved about America.

South Korean conductor Eun Sun Kim makes her BSO debut with a trio of pieces exploring innovation within tradition. Star pianist Inon Barnatan returns to Symphony Hall to take on one of Bartók’s final works, the Third Piano Concerto, a love letter to his wife and his home country. While living in poverty in New York having fled the onslaught of the Nazis into Hungary, Bartók’s creativity had stalled out, and his body was failing from a long illness. The concerto — not quite finished when he passed — is a more gentle and accessibly poetic work than his previous concerti, a summation of where Bartók’s style left him at the end of his life.
