The titan of the classical music world returns! Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3, one of four versions for his only opera Fidelio, this one including the famous offstage trumpet signal, is followed by the ta-ta-ta-da opening of the fifth symphony. There’s no better sound than the TSO filling the Music Hall with the unparalleled might of the Fifth. Bartók’s elegant and strongly folk-music influenced Concerto for Orchestra is one of his most popular works and with good reason‍—the orchestra sections become the soloists, showing off their virtuosic abilities.

Just when it seemed that Bartók, destitute and homesick, was at death’s door, he rallied to create the audaciously vibrant Concerto for Orchestra, spotlighting every instrument in the ensemble. For Ravel, a degenerative brain disease kept him from performing his own piano concerto, but it did not dampen his wondrous sense of sonic sparkle. Internationally renowned pianist and recording artist Alice Sara Ott preserves Ravel's musical vision with a playful rendition of his virtuosic concerto. Stravinsky, exiled from his Russian homeland and silenced by World War I, turned his frustration into the most rascally sort of fun in this burlesque tale about a cunning fox.

Lorenzo Viotti—known for his deep musical interpretations and work inviting new audiences to concert halls in the digital age—makes his first appearance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, leading two more rhapsodic pieces steeped in Hungarian, Czech, and Slovakian folk traditions. He guides Kodaly’s passionate Dances of Galánta before Marc Bouchkov—also making his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut—steps in to tackle each trill, scale, and double stop of Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto with precision and speed.

The Philharmonia’s former Principal Conductor leads the orchestra in a programme of orchestral highlights on tour in Italy.

Every member of the Philharmonia has their moment in the spotlight in Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a work fizzing with imagination. It’s hard to believe Bartók was in hospital in the early stages of his final illness when he accepted this commission, his music is so full of energy and life.

Salonen completes the programme with the First Symphony by his fellow Finn Jean Sibelius. From its haunting opening clarinet solo to the intense energy of the finale, this piece is a favourite with many Sibelius fans. And it’s a perfect introduction to his distinctive voice for anyone new to his music.

Debussy gazed at the waves of the English channel, and saw – and heard – a thousand glowing colours. Isolated and ill, the exiled Bartók wrote a piano concerto for his beloved wife, and created rhythms that dance for joy. And in our own time, Unsuk Chin gazes into the infinite and finds a star that pulses in time with the human heart. 

That’s actually true: Chin’s wondrous new orchestral work takes its cue both from Korean court music and the curiously human rhythm of the star Alaraph. It’s an unforgettable opening to conductor Dinis Sousa’s nature-inspired debut with the BBC SO: and with the 'remarkable' (Guardian) French pianist Bertrand Chamayou also appearing for the first time with the BBC SO, there’ll be a regular constellation of stars in alignment tonight. The concert closes with the insistent rhythms and drama of Ravel’s Boléro.

In 1827, Berlioz saw an English theater troupe perform works by Shakespeare, and he fell head over heels in love with Harriet Smithson, who played both Juliet and Ophelia. Ears of love, he begins his Symphonie Fantastique, which shows Berlioz's brilliant instrumentation, but even more epoch-making is his method of creating a whole between the five movements. The theme of the chosen one runs like a common thread throughout the work, and Berlioz really challenges the orchestra in this revolutionary work. In 1830 Harriet experienced the work, and three years later she and Berlioz were married.

Four varied works from the young British-Chinese violinist, who enjoys a busy international career. Appointed artist-in-residence with the London Mozart Players at the age of 14, in 2021 she gave a performance – streamed worldwide from Trafalgar Square – of Saint-Saëns’s Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso with the LSO under Sir Simon Rattle.

With his vibrant Hungarian dances, Johannes Brahms transports us to the charming countryside of Hungary. The country's folk music served as an endless source of inspiration for numerous composers. Although Brahms' melodies carry a folk touch, they are uniquely his own. Like many Romantic contemporaries, he infused an exotic flair into the symphonic tradition. Béla Bartók also delved into the roots of Hungarian music. Unlike Brahms, his music occasionally grates, aiming to capture the peculiarities of folk music. Bartók blends refinement and a raw style into a dazzling interplay of sounds. A lively, energetic program for a delightful Sunday kickoff.

Stories and styles converge in Hungarian composer Béla Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin Suite, opening with wonder and excitement. Continuing along the Silk Road, Orchestra Iowa’s Principal Cellist, Philip Bergman, performs Tan Dun’s evocative Crouching Tiger Concerto. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition wraps up the musical journey with its infamous booming fanfare at the Great Gate of Kiev.

Inspired by Flemish painters, Flor Alpaerts composed the extravagant James Ensor suite. In this Ensor year, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to the Ostend master, coinciding with an exhibition at the KMSKA. Erich Wolfgang Korngold's Violin Concerto, infused with quotes from his iconic film scores, reflects his Hollywood success after fleeing to America in the 1930s. Young prodigy Benjamin Beilman interprets this delightful concerto with folk nuances, reminiscent of Korngold's Czech roots. Béla Bartók, fleeing to America during World War II, crafted his Concerto for Orchestra with an intuitive, even 'brutal' style, featuring orchestral sections in a vibrant composition with fluid melodies and a sophisticated dialogue.

In a programme that also includes Beethoven’s sublimely concentrated and distilled examples, it’s the rebellious spirit of Bartók’s landmark 14 Bagatelles that most intrigues Piotr Anderszewski. Scabrous or shadowy, sardonic or impishly playful, they earth a visceral connection to the rhythms of Bartók’s beloved Hungarian folk music.

The Atenea Quartet makes its Wigmore Hall debut as part of a UK-wide tour. YCAT artist, and recipient of numerous prizes at international competitions, the quartet frequently performs across Europe, including in prestigious festivals, such as the Lucerne Festival, Barcelona String Quartet Biennale and Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.

The icarus Quartet, cofounded by Matt Keown (‘17, Percussion) and faculty artist Jeff Stern (MM ’14, Percussion), opens the Secret Artists Series 2024-25 season with its new Bartok Reborn program, featuring the Bartok Sonata for Two Piano and Percussion and three commissioned pieces by Martin Bresnick, Viet Cuong (BM ’11, MM ’12, Composition), and Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Higdon. The concert takes place September 30 at the Brendle Recital Hall in Winston-Salem, NC, and tickets are available online.

We are thrilled to have been invited back to Belgium, this time to open the new season at deSingel in Antwerp on 18th September and as part of the Flanders Festival Ghent on 19th September. For these two concerts, we will be joined by two artists making their debut with the COE: conductor Valentin Uryupin and Salzburg-born cellist Julia Hagen who is at the beginning of a global career. Together, they will perform Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 1 ‘Classical’, Schumann’s Cello Concerto and Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony No. 1 (arr. Barshai).

This concert features six extraordinary artists, each celebrated for their virtuosity, and sought after for their performances around the world. Returning musicians include pianist Sterling Elliott, recipient of the Sphinx Organization’s 2024 Medal of Excellence and a 2021 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient and American violinist Jennifer Frautschi, a two-time Grammy nominee and Avery Fisher career grant recipient. Debuting artists include Hungarian-Nicaraguan-American violinist Abigél Králik; American violist Natalie Loughran, the First Prize winner at the 2021 Primrose International Viola Competition; Armenian-American violist Cara Pogossian, a current Masters student at the New England Conservatory; and American pianist Evren Ozel, the recipient of the 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant.

The evening will spotlight Brahms’ "String Sextet No. 1," a masterpiece that will be brought to life through the personal stories of the musicians and the venerable histories of their instruments. Adding to the musical tapestry, we will present Bartók’s "Contrasts," a vibrant fusion of classical music and jazz elements, originally commissioned by the legendary Benny Goodman. This piece will showcase the talents of Yura Lee on violin, Anthony McGill on clarinet, and Gilles Vonsattel on piano, creating an unforgettable auditory experience.

Further enriching the program, Michi Wiancko’s "Lullaby for the Transient" will offer a meditative reflection on themes of immigration, performed by an ensemble including Simone Porter and TBA on violins, Jonathan Vinocour on viola, Paul Wiancko on cello, and Anthony McGill returning on clarinet.

The concert will also feature Brahms’ "String Sextet No. 1, Op. 18," interpreted by a distinguished group of musicians including James Ehnes, Jack Liebeck, Yura Lee, Jonathan Vinocour, Paul Watkins, and Kyril Zlotnikov.

Our 9th season opens with a celebration of contrasting styles, moods, and eras. Bartók’s “Contrasts,” ripe with folk dance melodies from his native Hungary and commissioned by jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman, begins the concert with a bang. Works by living composers Dobrinka Tabakova and Jenni Brandon comprise the middle of the program with two unique depictions of introspection, reflection, and calm. Dalia Stasevska lead the Orchestra in a sensational program of orchestral masterpieces. Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra has become a fixture of the repertoire and serves as a showcase for the Fabulous Philadelphians. The work has a local connection having been composed in 1943 in Saranac Lake, NY. The evening closes with Dvořák’s joyous and triumphant Symphony No. 8, which has not been performed at SPAC in over a decade.

Widely considered the most influential quartet cycle after Beethoven’s, Bartók’s collection of six string quartets is a landmark artistic achievement. The rare opportunity offered here—to experience the full quartet cycle performed over the course of one evening—gives listeners a unique insight into Bartók’s creative development as he revolutionized the string quartet genre and moved from composing in the Late-Romantic style to pioneering modernism. The Escher String Quartet, praised by The New York Times for their “penetrating intelligence” and “gorgeous tonal sheen,” plays the six quartets in order, with two intermissions.

On the 100th anniversary of the premiere of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, pianist/composer Conrad Tao presents a newly composed work—co-commissioned by SBC— honoring the original masterpiece’s highly theatrical spirit. It is paired with Bartók’s dance-infused Contrasts.

As a child prodigy, she was called “one in a million” by conductor Zubin Mehta. As a psychology student, she wrote a master’s thesis on pain. As an activist, she won the Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum at Davos and spoke before the U.N. As a performer, she is indomitable, playing dozens of concerts a year. The one and only Midori returns to Aspen for Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto. Bartók wrote the piece in 1938 as Hungary was forming an alliance with Nazi Germany, and it’s often heard as a musical farewell to his native land. The first movement has a dark, brooding atmosphere, the second a dreamy hypnotic character, and the finale is a virtuosic showcase for the soloist full of folk-inspired melodies and rhythmic twists and turns.
