Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho was brought to the world’s attention in 2015 when he won the First Prze at the Chopin International Competition in Warsaw. This “Chopin Competition winner can stand proud next to the likes of such illustrious past winners as Pollini, Argerich, and Zimerman,” said the Pianist.

Join in the festivities as the SLSO presents Beethoven’s personal favorite—his blazing, boisterous Seventh Symphony. Pianist Joyce Yang’s interpretation of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini is sure to ignite sparks of energy across Powell Hall in this spirited Thanksgiving weekend event, which also features conductor Kevin John Edusei’s SLSO debut. Yang has impressed audiences all over the globe, with reviewers applauding her “tremendous power” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) and “impeccable technique” (TheaterJones).

Opera and drama are rarely the focus of Thuringia's largest concert orchestra, which makes the program, which combines two stage works, all the more remarkable. Opening with Gabriel Fauré's incidental music for "Pelléas et Mélisande," the delicacy and tragedy of Maeterlinck's symbolic drama come alive in impressionistic soundscapes. The centerpiece of the evening is Béla Bartók's opera "Duke Bluebeard's Castle": an intense psychological drama in which Judith opens the locked doors of the castle and simultaneously uncovers her husband's secrets.

The Hamburg State Orchestra's Philharmonic Concerts become contemporary plays, transcending the boundaries of the ordinary. This concert features Ella Milch-Sheriff's musical interpretation of the texts from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" – some of Mahler's songs are replaced by new compositions by her, inspired by the original. Mahler confronts us today as a mirror of the past and, through Milch-Sheriff, as a part of the here and now. When Yuja Wang and Teddy Abrams last shared the stage in Louisville, it led to a Grammy win. Now, the longtime collaborators reunite for a night of electrifying virtuosity, diving into the bold sounds of Hungary.

Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 kicks things off with a whirlwind of fire and flair, followed by Ligeti’s Piano Concerto, a dazzling, shape-shifting masterwork that Wang navigates with “sly, jazzy exuberance” (Gramophone). Closing the program is Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, a tour-de-force that spotlights every section of the orchestra in a vibrant, folk-infused celebration.

He was a top prize winner in both the Rostropovich and Pablo Casals International Cello competitions. He has established a distinguished career as concerto soloist with symphony orchestras, in solo recitals, as an admired and sought-after chamber musician, and as a respected scholar and teacher. Formerly solo cellist of the Bamberg Symphony in Germany, he is now Principal Cello of The Cleveland Orchestra. Tian’s A Thousand Years of Good Prayers opens the evening with a piece that reflects on history and tradition, full of quiet strength and deep feeling. The evening's program is framed by two works for the ensemble of piano, viola and clarinet, an ensemble for which Mozart was the first to write a work back in 1786, which was to have a significant impact on the spread of the clarinet as a classical instrument. It was a fairly new instrument in Mozart's time, but quickly found its place as a fully integrated and widely used instrument in both orchestral and chamber music.

Dvořák features in our Symphonic Series this week and also here in our Chamber Series with his gorgeous Terzetto — a rich and complex trio famously composed in just one week. We pair it with a lively string quartet by Bartók. One of his first published pieces, the quartet pulses with rhythmic energy and momentum.

Due to the renovation of the Frankfurt Concert Hall, we are moving part of our chamber music series to the event hall of the Frankfurt Kleist Museum this season. This is a fitting opportunity for this Sunday matinee, as this museum will be opening the exhibition "Kleist and Music" in the fall of 2025. With this matinee, we are providing a piece of accompanying music to this show and to Kleist's era. The poet Heinrich von Kleist not only played the clarinet himself, but with Johann Baptist Vanhal and Iwan Müller, we have two of his contemporaries in the program. In Müller, we also have a clarinetist and composer who, as an instrument maker, made significant contributions to the further development of the clarinet.

It is probably the country that currently poses the most difficult puzzles for all friends of a united Europe, but at least culturally it is one of the most exciting in the East: Hungary exerted a considerable influence on Central European musical history in the 19th and 20th centuries. Yet far from the much-performed Brahms dances, the program features three, partly relatively unknown, Hungarian composers, all born around the turn of the century.
Béla Bartók's "Pictures" of his homeland, which the Swiss conductor Simon Gaudenz introduces at the beginning, are still somewhat familiar.

A radiant force in the new generation of pianists, Avery Gagliano brings insight, imagination, and a bold interpretive voice to the stage. Hailing from Washington, D.C., Gagliano is a recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and a mentee of Sir András Schiff at the Kronberg Academy in Germany. Lauded by The Philadelphia Inquirer as “a pianist who conveys a vivid musical personality and bold imagination,” Gagliano is a familiar and beloved presence on Washington Performing Arts stages. Her program traverses Romantic fervor, American lyricism, Hungarian fire, and the introspective intensity of late-Romantic Russian works—each piece a canvas for her expressive brilliance.

Ravel called his 1912 ballet Daphnis et Chloé a “choreographic symphony.” “My intention,” he wrote, “was to compose a vast musical fresco in which I was less concerned with archaism than with reproducing faithfully the Greece of my dreams.” The sumptuous, dreamlike music, conducted here by Jun Märkl in his SF Symphony debut, enchanted listeners from the start. Violinist Leonidas Kavakos joins the Symphony for a passionate performance of Bartók’s Violin Concerto No. 2, an exercise in radical simplicity. Bartók’s endlessly fertile five-note figure spawns hook after hook, each more captivating than the last.

Zoltán Kodály’s colourful Variations on a Hungarian Folksong sets the tone for this folk-inspired program. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts Boulez’s Rituel in memoriam Bruno Maderna (“the most sensuously appealing score of Boulez’s career,” The New Yorker) in an immersive production featuring L.A. Salonen also leads a pair of works Boulez championed during his tenure as the NY Phil’s Music Director: Bartók’s kaleidoscopic Concerto for Orchestra and Stravinsky’s Octet for winds.

Üdvözöljük! A real eye-catcher, this accumulation of umlauts, and also the perfect opening for our season's opening concert. In German, this Hungarian word means "Welcome!", and not only our new, interim General Music Director Gábor Hontvári comes from Hungary, but also the horn soloist László Gál. Not to mention Béla Bartók, the figurehead of Hungarian music par excellence, who died in exile in the USA 80 years ago. One of his last compositions was the Concerto for Orchestra: a foray through musical history, with sprinkles of Renaissance and jazz, folklore and dance, as well as a feast of timbres in which virtually every orchestral instrument is put in the spotlight. It's hard to believe that the 62-year-old was already terminally ill when he wrote this brilliant piece...

Inspired by a poem which translates to Afternoon of a Fawn, it spotlights the fine first flute of the Philharmonic. What better way to celebrate the Orchestra’s 125th anniversary than with the commissioning and world premiere performances of a new work by preeminent American composer John Adams? Béla Bartók was being treated for leukemia in a New York hospital and was all but bankrupt when contemporary music champion Serge Koussevitzky persuaded him to write his Concerto for Orchestra. The reluctant Bartók composed an orchestral showpiece that many would say was the highlight of his career.

In addition to his enormous successes in the USA and his native Czech Republic, Antonín Dvořák was also highly revered in Great Britain. Commissioned by England, he wrote the gruesome cantata "The Ghost Bride" for his British fans in 1885. This powerful choral work perfectly captures the dramatic mood of the story in music and was met with rapturous acclaim. Dvořák's fellow countryman, conductor Jakub Hrůša, will continue the Czech-British friendship as Music Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, starting in September 2025. Their first joint tour will include a stop at the Elbphilharmonie.

An ambassador for living and inclusive music, Alizé Léhon graduated brilliantly from the Paris Conservatoire (CNSMD) in 2024, the same year she was selected for Malko's young conductors' competition and awarded the Neeme Järvi Prize at the Gstaad Conducting Academy.

How deceptive outward appearances can sometimes be: In the photos that exist of him, Johannes Brahms always looks so serious, so stern, so aloof into the camera. But the man with the impressive bushy beard evidently also possessed wit and humor. "I've never written anything so sad, so plump: the score must appear with a black border," he announced to his publisher, who was waiting for the master's Second Symphony to be completed.

Our first guest artist of the 25-26 concert season, pianist Evren Ozel, recently competed in the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Ozel came away with two awards: Best Performance of the Mozart Concerto Award, and the Bronze Medal for the overall competition – bravo!! We are thrilled to have him perform at our season opener on September 13 and are pleased to partner with Opening Nights at FSU to offer audiences an additional chance to hear his talent. At this special recital, Evren Ozel will perform some of his favorite solo piano works in the more intimate setting of Opperman Music Hall.

Gustavo Dudamel opens his season as the Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Music and Artistic Director Designate with a program spanning the American musical landscape. As the NY Phil marks the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, the Orchestra presents a World Premiere by Kanaka Maoli composer Leilehua Lanzilotti and Symphony No. 2 by the forefather of American classical music, Charles Ives. Yunchan Lim is soloist in Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3, dating from the Hungarian composer’s time as a New York–based émigré.

Tabea Zimmermann and the Ensemble Resonanz explore the music of the first half of the 20th century – a time of change, full of ruptures, contrasts and new possibilities. Three works by George Enescu, Lili Boulanger and Béla Bartók reflect the diversity and richness of this era: between impressionism and folkloristic inspiration, between dazzling beauty and impending doom.

Few works can make a symphony orchestra quiver with shared joy like Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra. The Hungarian national anthem struck a rare folk nerve with his virtuoso composition and, terminally ill with cancer, created an orchestral work of impressive vitality that has been high on the orchestral repertoire worldwide ever since its premiere in Boston in 1943. It is written virtuosically and soloistically for almost the entire orchestra, and everyone gets a rightful turn in the spotlight; even the tuba has a distinctive and extremely funny solo! The symphony orchestra sparkles and sparkles in a musical tour de force that offers both good melodies, humor, striking beauty and sublime orchestration in Bartók's probably most beloved work, which with its terrific final movement constantly sends pumping symphonic energy into the world and reminds us, that the casing of the body need not be a prison for the wild forces of thought and creativity.

Béla Bartók and Antonín Dvořák each gave the music of their homeland a face, a voice, and a sound, each in his own unique way. Melodic and rhythmic elements that can be considered characteristic of Hungary and Bohemia have found their way into many of their works. Bartók's Violin Concerto No. 1, an early work from 1907/08, born of deep emotional connection, embodies his style with its elegy and vitality. Similarly, with his Symphony No. 8, composed in 1889, Dvořák succeeded in creating music that captivates with its inventiveness and experimental spirit, as well as its melodic and rhythmic qualities, while simultaneously proving immensely diverse and colorful.

We close the summer with a special matinee performance highlighting Dvořák’s Bohemian masterwork that has delighted audiences for over a century. The concert features a special collaboration of the Terras and Ozel, who have separately received rousing ovations at the Tannery.

"A piece of wood that screeches at the top and hums at the bottom" - not a very flattering description for a cello. This quote comes from Antonín Dvořák himself, who composed one of the most beautiful cello concertos ever. Anyone who listens to this music knows: Dvořák must have secretly loved the cello. He wrote the concerto in the winter of 1894/95 in New York, but American influences are not evident in it. Instead, it contains everything we love and appreciate about Dvořák: wonderfully melodic tunes, often tinged with sounds from Dvořák's homeland of Bohemia, grand dramatic crescendos, and lyrical goosebump-inducing moments. And for the cellist, there are plenty of opportunities to showcase the qualities of their instrument. In our performance, cellist legend Truls Mørk plays, from whom Tabita Berglund herself learned. Before starting her career as a conductor, she studied the cello! For her debut as the First Guest Conductor, she has also chosen Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra," whose finale can confidently be described as one of the most thrilling, ecstatic movements in 20th-century music.

Stars such as festival prize winners Julian Bliss and Sebastian Klinger, pianist Matthias Kirschnereit, and violinist Michael Barenboim are among the lecturers at the Rostock University of Music and Theatre's summer campus. The best course participants will perform three concerts with the North German Philharmonic Orchestra Rostock at the end of the program—and their famous teachers will also be on stage. They will also open the summer campus with a chamber concert, where they will present themselves to students and audiences.
