The story, set during the Crusades, follows the mischievous Count Ory as he attempts to woo Countess Adèle, who is in love with Ory's cousin, Isolier. The opera is celebrated for its exquisite balance of comedic elements and musical sophistication, avoiding vulgarity while captivating the audience with its charm.

Set in Vienna, the story unfolds at Prince Orlofsky's masquerade ball, leading to a night filled with quiproquos, intrigues, and a humorous twist of revenge.
