Pianist

What is a human being? That is the question that the internationally renowned composer Pedro Halffter addresses in a brand new chamber opera that premiered in Spain in 2022, later played in the USA, and is now being performed at Operaen i Midten in central and western Jutland.

The focal point is Klara – a robot with artificial intelligence, who gains both reason and emotions, and can therefore philosophize and explore the life around her. For what does it actually mean that robots become aware of themselves as individuals? And what could this mean for humans' use of technology and artificial intelligence in the future?

Klara is played by the American opera singer Ashley Galvani Bell. The focal point of the scene is two grand pianos placed opposite each other, between which the main character moves. The music is provided by two pianists, one of whom is the composer himself.

Opera Hispánica, the premiere opera company in the United States focused on the classical vocal arts from the Hispanic perspective, in collaboration with National Sawdust, Divaria Productions, and the New York City Opera, presents the New York premiere of KLARA, in a new production directed and choreographed by acclaimed Broadway choreographer Richard Stafford, featuring soprano Ashley Galvani Bell, dancer Laura Henning, and Silvia Santinelli and Pedro Halffter himself at the pianos.

The first play of a comic trilogy (Beaumarchais) that shocked the 18th-century elite is the basis of Rossini’s masterpiece The Barber of Seville. Teeming with action and bursting with unforgettable melodies, this opera is sure to make you break out into laughter. In the whimsical approach of stage director Joan Font and the Spanish troupe Els Comediants, this production cleverly incorporates some circus arts, acrobatics, and pantomime. For the occasion, the Orchestre Métropolitain will reunite with Spanish conductor Pedro Halffter who conducted the OM in Madama Butterfly in 2023.
