Join the Academy of St Martin in the Fields as they collaborate with the acclaimed cellist Anastasia Kobekina, the 2024 Leonard Bernstein Award winner at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. Described by Le Figaro as an unrivalled musician, Kobekina will bring her exceptional talent to the stage with a performance of Haydn’s C major cello concerto. This masterpiece, lost and unheard for almost two centuries, was composed during Haydn’s early years with the Esterházy family and is known for pushing the boundaries of the baroque form.

In addition to Haydn’s concerto, Kobekina will perform Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne, derived from his popular ballet Pulcinella, which was based on music originally attributed to Pergolesi but actually composed by Domenico Gallo. Gallo’s Follia will also be featured in the programme.

Our new season of Live at Lunch concerts continues our long-established partnership with Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music. Pianist Yuxuan Zhao brings with him a dramatic programme of masterworks.

Yuxuan begins with Haydn’s last piano sonata, composed in London and considered his greatest because of the almost symphonic sounds and mastery of the sonata form. The central part of the recital features Frederic Chopin, from his poetic and turbulent Ballade No. 2, through five of the brilliant jewels of his famous Preludes, to the delicate, dreamy Nocturne. The recital ends with what is currently one of the most popular works in classical music – Ravel’s La Valse. A tribute to the Viennese Waltz, it takes us from a glittering ballroom to the fantastic, fatal whirling of the finale.

Tonight, burlesque comes to The Bridgewater Hall. Petrushka is a puppet brought to life in Igor Stravinsky’s electrifying ballet. Taking centre stage is Mardi Gras with all its carnival atmosphere; there are noisy revellers, curious circus acts and a magician who gives wooden dolls a soul – for just one night.

The spotlight also shines on one of the world’s most distinguished trumpet players, Håkan Hardenberger. We get a double helping of him, in Haydn’s famous Concerto, plus a unique opportunity to hear the vivid sounds of Franco-American composer Betsy Jolas’s Onze Lieder.

The phrase “army of generals” was used by the 18th century author Charles Burney to describe the splendid court orchestra at Mannheim, Germany, an orchestra coveted by Mozart. AAM rediscovers the glorious music of Brazilian composer Mauricio Nunes Garcia – in the company of his heroes Mozart and Haydn.
When Haydn travelled to London, his friend Mozart worried that it might be a journey too far. But the 18th century classical tradition didn’t end at the shores of Europe, and on the far side of the Atlantic, Mauricio Nunes Garcia was creating music of genius – and rising to become one of the brightest stars in Brazilian and Portuguese music.

The young Britten blended chamber and orchestral music in a portrait of his first love in Young Apollo, while Thomas Adès draws on English folk music in the fairytale dances he composed for Kuusisto. New York composer Timo Andres looks to outdo Beethoven in his flamboyant piano concerto The Blind Banister, and Sally Beamish salutes Frankenstein creator Mary Shelley in her dream-inspired Whitescape. To close, Kuusisto travels back to the 18th century, to the charm and elegance of one of Haydn’s wittiest symphonies.

Trio Gaspard has championed the entire breadth of piano trio repertoire to become one of the most sought-after trios of its generation, praised for its unique and fresh approach to the score. ‘A truly refreshing performance! As well as exploring well-known classics, the players work with contemporary composers and research seldom-played masterpieces. Committed to commissioning new works, in this concert they perform a piece they have commissioned from the Moldovan composer and violinist  Patricia Kopatchinskaja. They conclude Manchester Chamber Concert’s season with Schubert’s Trio No. 1 described as  pouring out a stream of spontaneous melody. From its soaring opening theme to the sublimated echoes of Viennese popular music in the finale, the music exudes life-affirming energy.

Then audiences will land in sunny California with Martinu’s Sinfonietta La Jolla. Finally, ICO’s professional chorus returns for Haydn’s “Mass in the Time of War.”

Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Christ is a deep, contemplative drama based on the events leading up to the crucifixion and the earthquake that marked the moment of Jesus’s death. The music pulls us into an ominous and unsettled world; a lament at the foot of the cross. Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen for strings is another lament, this time for the destruction wrought in Munich in World War II and the shattering of cultural life as the composer knew it. Full of loss and anguish – but also serenity and majesty – this is music for meditation and reflection this Good Friday.
