Tragedy after Sophocles by Roland Schimmelpfennig. The war between the brothers Polyneices and Eteocles leads to a deep division in Thebes. King Creon refuses to grant the fallen Polyneices burial, which moves Antigone to defy the law in order to pay her brother the final honor. In his first production at the Hessian State Theatre Wiesbaden, the Georgian director Mikheil Charkviani confronts a democratic society with the question: How ready are you to defend your moral values?

Music possesses an almost magical ability to tell stories. It can paint vivid images of far off lands, enchanted forests, fairy tale villages, the timeless battle between good and evil — all without a single spoken word. Step into the enchanted world of German legends, filled with tales of mysterious swan knights, magic bullets, and mischievous tricksters. Then, delve into the otherworldly Contact; inspired by the idea of interstellar communication, this jazzy, bluegrass-infused, and ethereal concerto for trio was collaboratively written with and for Time For Three.

Tall Tales

First Baptist Church

‘I am the new Bacchus, pressing out glorious wine for the human spirit,’ declared Ludwig van Beethoven. True, he wasn’t known for his modesty – but until you’ve heard his incredible Seventh Symphony in full, heart-pounding flight, you’ve never known just how intoxicating music can be. This is music that demands total commitment, body and soul and we can expect the young British conductor Adam Hickox to raise the roof tonight.

Mozart & Beethoven

Frauenthal Center

Join us for a rare UK visit from this top-tier German orchestra – with a trio of Romantic masterpieces.

Tonight’s centrepiece needs little introduction: Grieg’s Piano Concerto, a perennial favourite both before and after it was immortalised by Morecambe, Wise and André Previn. Charismatic Italian virtuoso Federico Colli will be playing all the right notes in the right order, as befits a recent winner of the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition.

The Bridgewater Hall

Bold, provocative and brilliant, Federico Colli has commanded attention since winning the Gold Medal at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 2012 and has built a reputation as a ‘pianist likely to dominate the world stage in years to come’ (International Piano Magazine). For his debut at the Royal Concert Hall he brings Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto, whose imperious opening sets the tone for a dynamic, epically-scaled dialogue between soloist and orchestra. As expected, Beethoven’s gestures are grand and heroic but there’s also room for great tenderness in the slow movement, which so impressed conductor Leonard Bernstein that he adopted its initial theme for the song ‘Somewhere’ in West Side Story.

Federico Colli is the name that every piano fan is talking about right now – and it’s no wonder. ‘Federico Colli illuminates each work’s uniqueness and his beautiful sound consistently beguiles the ear,’ wrote The Sunday Times, and this award-winning young Italian pianist simply has it all. We’re delighted to welcome him to Cadogan Hall in Grieg’s hugely-popular concerto: expect this evergreen classic to blossom more beautifully than ever.

The first in a series of three concerts celebrating the Polish genius Frédéric Chopin. A virtuoso pianist himself, Chopin’s œuvre – of which every work involves the piano – is universally admired to this day.
