Soulpepper Theatre proudly presents the Canadian Premiere of "English" by Sanaz Toossi, a New York Times Critic's Pick and Winner of the 2022 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play. This heartfelt and humorous production explores the complexities of language and identity, as four adult students in Iran navigate the challenges of learning English in hopes of unlocking their futures. Amidst a linguistic mess, they question their ability to express humor in a new language, revealing the personal and political stakes of language mastery.

Join us for this compelling play, on stage from February 9 to March 5. Engage with the conversation using #spEnglish and delve into the themes of what gets lost and found in translation. The play promises an approximate runtime of 75 minutes with no intermission, including special Covid Conscious Performances at 50% capacity with masks required, and a Relaxed Performance on Sunday, February 26 at 1:30 PM.

In addition to the play, Soulpepper offers a unique opportunity for Iranian, Kurdish, and West Asian emerging artists aged 18 and up to join our Playwriting Workshop led by award-winning playwright Shahrzad Arshadi. This free workshop, running from February 25-27, invites participants to begin writing original plays that blend autobiography, myth, and imagination.

"English" is a co-production with The Segal Centre for Performing Arts, featuring a talented cast and creative team, including Ghazal Partou, Aylin Oyan Salahshoor, Sepehr Reybod, Ghazal Azarbad, and more, under the co-direction of Anahita Dehbonehie and Guillermo Verdecchia.
