Jazz, blues and orchestral sounds converge in a rousing celebration of the American story. The CSO joins forces with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for Liberty (Symphony No. 5), jazz legend Wynton Marsalis’ latest symphonic work. The program opens with a new work by American icon John Adams and Copland’s Appalachian Spring, which celebrates the American pioneer spirit and famously quotes the Shaker hymn Simple Gifts.

Jader Bignamini, Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, conducts a suite from Stravinsky’s The Firebird; the music of this fairytale ballet, including its scintillating “Infernal Dance,” still feels fresh and wild. Stravinsky learned a great deal from his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov; here the MSO explores the latter’s Spanish-accented Capriccio espagnol, from its first alborada (morning song) to its final fandango. Witness a rising star as Giuseppe Gibboni, winner of the Paganini Violin Competition, performs an intoxicating violin concerto by Pulitzer Prize-winning jazz legend Wynton Marsalis.

In 1983, he became the first and only artist ever to win both a Classical and Jazz Grammy in the same year; in 1984 he did it again. "Simon Höfele's tone sounds like that of an oboe. No, it sounds like a human voice. Or maybe a trumpet? Disturbingly beautiful," said the SWR (South German Broadcasting Corporation) of this brilliant trumpeter. But it's not just his tone that makes him an exceptional musician. He plays a repertoire of impressive range with the highest quality. This makes him one of the best and most renowned trumpeters of his generation. As a soloist, he has appeared worldwide with leading orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. He performs at the Elbphilharmonie, as well as at Wigmore Hall, the Tonhalle Zurich, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. ​​In the 2024/25 season, Simon Höfele was "Artist in Residence" at the Jena Philharmonie, and in 2021/22 he was with us.

In October 2022, UMS hosted an intensive weeklong residency with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra that included two concerts, a School Day Performance, multiple residency activities on and off campus, and a halftime performance at the Michigan football game. While a February residency precludes an appearance on the 50-yard line, we’re thrilled that Wynton and his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will return for another distinctive UMS residency this year, presenting the preview premiere of Marsalis’s Symphony No. 5 for symphony orchestra and jazz orchestra, which will receive its world premiere a few months later by The Philadelphia Orchestra.

This concert conducted by Leslie Suganandarajah demonstrates that the USA has much to offer despite current turmoil. The Sri Lankan-born conductor has been Music Director of the Salzburg Landestheater since 2019, where he brings together a broad spectrum of American music.
He begins with Anna Clyne, this season's Composer in Focus of the GSO, followed by the even more recent Trumpet Concerto by the already legendary jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, featuring Selina Ott, born in Austria in 1998, as soloist. And after the interval, a rarity: Florence Price, who made a name for herself at the beginning of the 20th century, was one of the first female composers in the USA.

A note from the Maestro: Our second concert in the 130th Season Masterworks series focuses on orchestral Americana with compositional styles that are as wide-reaching as the American frontier. Dvořák is well known for the style in which he culls musical material from traditional folk sources, and the Symphony No. 8 is laden with tunes he heard while composing in America. The new violin concerto by Wynton Marsalis blends jazz, blues and other classic folk styles into a canvas of American life and dreams and, in the music of William Grant Still, we hear a composer influenced by melodies and motives from the black American community as he skillfully weaves this material into traditional symphonic forms.

Franz Schubert set the scene of the "cheerful," "capricious trout" from Christian Schubart's poem to music in one of his most famous and popular songs. So popular that, a few years after this popular success, he used the themes of the "Trout" song as the basis for a sequel: the equally cheerful "Trout Quintet." Within Schubert's oeuvre, the posthumously published piano quintet is the only one of its kind. Before the Simply Quartet crowns its Ordenssaal concert with this captivating and characterful piece, it will perform excerpts from the first string quartet by jazz musician and composer Wynton Marsalis and the late-discovered and published "Poem" by the late Romantic composer Rebecca Clarke.

Finding coherence in the complex – that is the Simply Quartet's recipe for success. After winning several international competitions, including the Carl Nielsen Competition in Copenhagen and the Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna, the young ensemble is one of the rising stars of the quartet scene. For their debut in our quartet series, the four musicians will perform classics of the genre such as Mozart's “Hunting Quartet” and Grieg's Opus 27, as well as Wynton Marsalis’ jazzy Creole Contradanzas and American composer Rebecca Clarke’s thought-provoking Poem.

Beethoven's Trio op. 11 was called the "Gassenhauer Trio" because of the variation theme, which was very popular at the time. With Max Bruch's virtuoso pieces for clarinet trio and Poulenc's duo, the program draws a connection to the sound worlds of saxophonist Daniel Schnyder, who has found his own way in "Worlds Beyond" on a fine line between classical, avant-garde and jazz. Four bassoons "speak" in the composition by Wynton Marsalis, who is at home between classical and jazz, bringing an instrument that is rarely heard as a soloist from the back rows of the orchestra to the podium ramp.

The vibe continues with Herrerías’ intricate and urgent dance rhythms, and a new work by Seth Krimsky himself. Then Brittany Breeden’s quartet of friends explores unique Americana drawn from the Deep South. In At The Octoroon Balls, Wynton Marsalis was inspired by creole musical traditions, translated for string quartet: fiddle reels, hoe downs, jug stomps and marching bands.

Marsalis' 'The Jungle' will then take you on a 65-minute auditory exploration of New York City, with its fast-paced movements and blues-tinged melodies, culminating in a finale that captures the city's bold spirit through wailing brass and rhythmic riffs. The concert is set to conclude at approximately 8:55 pm, including a 20-minute interval.

Wynton Marsalis’ Symphony No 4, The Jungle, is a wild and brilliant portrait of New York City in all its dazzling, high-pressure, cosmopolitan glory. Featuring glimpses of ragtime and elements of popular dance music, its six movements combine rapid and hard-swinging fast passages with poignant blues-tinged melodies and colourful, plushly orchestrated jazz chords. The ‘La Esquina’ movement pays homage the city’s Afro-Latin culture while the work’s finale sees wailing brass spin bold melodies over rhythmic riffs. Coffee, Conversations & Classics - Brahms’ Symphony No. 1

What kind of woman is she? The former professional tennis player Marie Jacquot seems to have been taking the stage by storm for several years. Since the 2023/24 season, the Frenchwoman has been principal guest conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and from the 2024/25 season she will also take on the role of chief conductor of the Royal Danish Theatre Copenhagen. And for the 2026/27 season she will become chief conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra. Here the hackneyed phrase becomes true: we will be hearing a lot more from her.

A week-long festival of Czech music in New York launches at the Bohemian National Hall with the spotlight on young talents from the Czech Republic, USA and UK. A celebratory evening of chamber music will feature string quartets by composers from the young musicians’ respective homelands – Antonín Dvořák, Wynton Marsalis and Edward Elgar – before they join forces with Czech Philharmonic players in Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings, led by concertmaster Jiří Vodička.

To call Wynton Marsalis a legendary trumpeter is merely to scratch the surface of one of the most multifaceted musicians around. His music is a glorious melting pot of jazz, Latin, Bartók, hoedown, Prokofiev, blues… and it’s absolutely thrilling. So, his Violin Concerto needs a soloist with immense musical flexibility (few concertos have a movement called ‘Hootenanny’) as well as high virtuosity, and of course the Auckland Philharmonia’s Andrew Beer is one of those rare musicians.

The acclaimed Calidore String Quartet continues its week-long residency with a program of eclectic works for four, six, and eight string instruments. Winner of BBC Music Magazine’s 2024 Chamber Award, Calidore has been praised for its “deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct” (New York Times). Following Wynton Marsalis’s New Orleans-inspired string quartet and a world premiere from John Williams, the group is joined by Quartet Integra, Colburn’s ensemble-in-residence, for works by Korngold and Mendelssohn.

Sibelius, inspired by watching sixteen swans take flight, imbued his Fifth Symphony with a mystical transcendence. Living jazz legend Wynton Marsalis channeled the saxophone pyrotechnics of Charlie “Bird” Parker into astonishing feats of virtuosity for classical tuba, played by the BSO’s own Principal Tuba Aubrey Foard. An instant hit following its 1903 debut, Nielsen's richly evocative Helios Overture depicts the sun rising and setting over the Aegean Sea.
