Wynton Marsalis is a world-renowned trumpeter, bandleader, composer, and a leading advocate of American culture. Marsalis was born to a musical family in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961. He began performing jazz and classical trumpet music from an early age. In 1980, upon moving to New York to attend The Juilliard School, Marsalis launched his career performing as a member of the legendary Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.

Chineke! return to the festival in 2024. The concert begins with the sparkling Ballade, Op. 33, by the British composer Samuel Coleridge- Taylor, a work of late Romanticism that immediately catches the ear. It might be reminiscent of Tchaikovsky or Dvořák. The latter undoubtedly influenced the symphonic music of the African American composer Florence Price. In 2022, Yannick Nézet-Séguin introduced Price’s First Symphony to Lucerne, and now we can hear her Third. In between, things get jazzy with the Violin Concerto by the legendary trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis.

They make their International Festival debut with a typically eclectic and innovative concert. Benjamin Britten wrote his 1933 Divertimenti as a student and based them on affectionate musical portraits of school friends. Their bright, sunny evocations offer an early glimpse into the composer’s musical imagination.

Michael Francis packs this program with American greats in honor of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, the centerpiece of our season. Launching the concert is Herald, Holler and Hallelujah, a powerful fanfare for brass and percussion by jazz icon Wynton Marsalis. While living in sunny Hollywood, Stravinsky fed off his love of American jazz for his Ebony Concerto, this week featuring TFO Principal Clarinet Natalie Hoe. Rounding out the program is Grammy Award winner Mason Bates’ high-voltage Alternative Energy and the legendary Leonard Bernstein’s Three Dance Episodes from On the Town.

The first half of this globally inspired program, “Folk Encounters,” pairs Su Lian Tan’s evocation of traditional South Asian puppet theatre with Wynton Marsalis’ exploration of the complicated American Creole experience through the lens of a New Orleans ball. The program finishes with folk-inspired chamber music by Dvořák. Dvořák’s exuberant Viola Quintet reflects the composer’s delight in finding kinship between the folk music of America and his beloved homeland of Czechoslovakia.

Two singular composers tell the tale of a fiddler’s Faustian bargain and musical duel with the devil. The suite from L’histoire du soldat is one of Stravinsky’s most memorable chamber works, retaining the stylistic range, dance elements, and expert instrumentation of his larger-scale compositions. In Wynton Marsalis’s re-imagining, A Fiddler’s Tale, he takes Stravinsky’s early jazz ingredients even further, melding jazz and classical idioms together with an updated narrative—here performed by special guest Phylicia Rashad and conducted by longtime Marsalis collaborator Damien Sneed. Dvořák traveled to America in the 1890s, and this wild, new country thrilled him. He admired the beauty of African American spirituals and was fascinated by Native American traditions. When describing his “New World” symphony, he said, “I tried to write only in the spirit of those national American melodies,” but his Ninth is clearly an expression of both the Old World and the new. It is joined by Martinů’s Second Symphony, commissioned by Cleveland’s Czech community for the Orchestra, and the world premiere of a new concerto by Wynton Marsalis, written for principal trumpet Michael Sachs.

Wynton Marsalis’ Symphony No 4, The Jungle, is a wild and brilliant portrait of New York City in all its dazzling, high-pressure, cosmopolitan glory. Featuring glimpses of ragtime and elements of popular dance music, its six movements combine rapid and hard-swinging fast passages with poignant blues-tinged melodies and colourful, plushly orchestrated jazz chords. The ‘La Esquina’ movement pays homage the city’s Afro-Latin culture while the work’s finale sees wailing brass spin bold melodies over rhythmic riffs. Like the (second) greatest city in the world, this intoxicating cacophony of sounds, cultures and identities will leave you thinking.
