Joseph Haydn's Opus 33 was a big bang in music history, because with it he achieved nothing less than the invention of the classical string quartet. The quartets of Opus 20 were a milestone on this path: They are an exciting look right into the composer's workshop. We look over Haydn's shoulder, so to speak, hear how he experiments, how he tries out new things and pushes boundaries - and finally finds his very own personal language when it comes to string quartets. Haydn's quartets were so perfectly balanced, so precisely formed, that he became a role model for subsequent generations of composers. And the young British Barbican Quartet, which won first prize at the renowned ARD Music Competition in 2022, is tracing these lines of development. For example, with Ludwig van Beethoven, who gave Haydn's classical tone an emotional depth, particularly impressively in the harrowing and at the same time immensely comforting "Song of Thanksgiving" from the String Quartet No. 15 in A minor, Op. 132. While Alban Berg takes the string quartet genre into the modern age with his Opus 3, the last work he composed during his studies with Arnold Schoenberg.

Young artists from Caramoor’s Evnin Rising Stars program perform in a pair of concerts for which the program’s Guest Artistic Director, cellist Marcy Rosen, is joined by distinguished artists Shmuel Ashkenasi, viola, and Edgar Meyer, double bass. In these concerts, you will be treated to works by Boccherini, Dohnányi, Mozart, Schubert, and the masterful Edgar Meyer himself. This concert is a unique opportunity to experience the vibrancy and skill of rising stars Maria Ioudenitch, Lun Li, Amarins Wierdsma, Njord Fossnes, Cara Pogossian, Gabriel Martins, Chase Park, and Janice Carissa as they perform pieces that challenge and showcase their growing artistry.

The program includes Luigi Boccherini's Quintet in A Major, Op. 29 No. 4, G. 316, Edgar Meyer's Quintet, and Ernő Dohnányi's Piano Quintet in C Minor, offering a rich evening of musical exploration and enjoyment.
