This event sees the launch of Goethe: His Faustian Life (Bloomsbury Continuum), the new book by a leading literary figure of our time whose wide range has already taken in studies of Milton, Tolstoy, Dickens, CS Lewis and Iris Murdoch. The program promises an afternoon of rich musical exploration, featuring Michael Ippolito's "The Long Year," a song cycle dedicated to Liverman and premiered by him at the Kennedy Center in 2022. The recital will also include William Grant Still's "Grief," selections from Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Songs of Travel," and a captivating set of Four Spirituals, among other works by Gabriel Fauré, Franz Schubert, Carl Loewe, and Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Two musical Dames at the very tops of their respective professions – Dame Sarah Connolly received The King’s Medal for Music in 2023, whilst Dame Imogen Cooper received the late Queen’s Medal for Music in 2019 – once again join together in recital as they previously have to considerable acclaim at such venues as the Cheltenham Festival and the Oxford International Song Festival. ‘The warm relationship between both performers came across in their performance and the audience was delighted’, wrote the Henley Standard. The programme includes songs both familiar and unfamiliar , including Loewe’s setting of texts better known from Schumann and examples by the neglected Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck.

The Irish mezzo has risen to a high position as an exponent of numerous major roles around the world but enjoys a particular relationship with the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, where she received the prestigious Pro meritis scientiae et litterarum award in 2013 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the arts; earlier this year she was artist-in-residence at the Glimmerglass Festival.
