Beethoven's "Symphony of Destiny" breathes the spirit of revolution, both artistic and political, and has become a musical symbol of humanity's liberation from darkness into light. Isang Yun's fanfare resounds like a warning cry, followed in the memorial by memories and visions of the future. In this composition, Yun also creates a symbiosis of Western European and Korean musical traditions, which is what makes his work unique. Karl Amadeus Hartmann composed a warning with his Concerto funèbre, written after the annexation of the Sudetenland in 1939: He sensed that even darker times lay ahead.

The Five Pieces for String Quartet were the work with which Erwin Schulhoff achieved his breakthrough in Salzburg in 1924. The dedication to his French colleague Darius Milhaud reveals what he was aiming for: the concise brevity of the movements, the suite-like sequence, and the aphoristic treatment of the material. The "Five Pieces" are primarily rhythmically inspired, which is probably why one review described them as "nice and lively dance pieces." One should not be fooled by this pleasantness: Schulhoff experiments ingeniously with motivic, metrical, and harmonic forms.

When he wrote his Opus 88 in 1842, Robert Schumann initially referred to it as a piano trio, but later gave it the title "Fantasiestücke". This also fits better with the four charming character pieces, which unfold their charm in simple song forms and dance movements. While the "Fantasiestücke" were Schumann's first forays into piano trios, Franz Schubert's E-flat major trio was written in the year of the composer's death. This is not the only reason why it is a special work, which Schumann once described with admiration as an "angry celestial apparition". In the middle of this Schumann-Schubert sandwich is the piano trio by Isang Yun, which continued the history of the genre in the 20th century with its twelve-tone row.

Here, shattered destinies intersect: Andrzej Panufnik dedicates his Katyn Epitaph to the victims of the 1940 massacre; Arnold Schoenberg writes Friede auf Erden as an impossible pacifist vow. Flautist Ana de la Vega brings to life Elżbieta Sikora's Flute Concerto – a co-commissioned work in which the virtuoso engages in a dialogue with a contemporary orchestra. Julius Eastman celebrates Joan of Arc in a minimalist trance, while Franz Schreker, persecuted by the Nazi regime, offers his Schwanengesang , an elegiac swan song. Isang Yun, a Korean abducted in 1967 by the secret service of the South Korean dictatorship, unfolds his Carpet for Strings  ; Malek Jandali, a Syrian in exile, proclaims Freedom  ; Kareem Roustom, of Palestinian origin, brings the traditional Dabke to life. A serious, feverish, necessary evening.
