When he wrote his Opus 88 in 1842, Robert Schumann initially referred to it as a piano trio, but later gave it the title "Fantasiestücke". This also fits better with the four charming character pieces, which unfold their charm in simple song forms and dance movements. While the "Fantasiestücke" were Schumann's first forays into piano trios, Franz Schubert's E-flat major trio was written in the year of the composer's death. This is not the only reason why it is a special work, which Schumann once described with admiration as an "angry celestial apparition". In the middle of this Schumann-Schubert sandwich is the piano trio by Isang Yun, which continued the history of the genre in the 20th century with its twelve-tone row.
